the hating of america by americans

i was floored today to discover this repellant site (not work safe) which berates 'the south' in vulgar and hateful terms, as if 'the south' was responsible for the defeat of john kerry. one might as well make a site about the west, or the midwest--or flyover america in general. to the cretin who composed this rant, i suggest an examination of this map--

and what those colors really mean.

i must disagree with kelly sue--it's neither funny nor true--and in light of the fact that 'they've' got the guns and the martial tradition, really foolish. if the writer thinks southerners are really that stupid and violent, maybe deliberately pissing them off ain't the road to go. (having been raised amongst them, i have to say that, although they are easily annoyed by people who think they are smarter, southerners find it incredibly easy to ignore the rest of america, even as america finds it easy to ignore the rest of the world. so rest well, blue america : johnny reb's not going to murder you in your bed.) i felt myself forced to remark,

*unpleasant* reading, and factually incorrect in a number--technically, scads--of places. i have neither time nor desire to fisk the whole business, but i might point out that washington, jefferson, and hancock to name just three were all southerners--why the writer believes that new england is the unitary source of american independence is thus a puzzle to me.* the revolutionary war in the north was conventional by the standards of the time, little armies marching up and down: in the south--mind, the most important battle and capstone of the war (Yorktown) was fought there--the war was bloody, dark, and almost genocidal. the south suffered terribly while boston and philadelphia remained untouched and unburned.

i also would observe that the expressed regret that we fought a civil war to retain the union is astonishing from a (modern) democrat: what would a black person say that the war to free them was worthless and should not have been fought? also--just for giggles: the democratic party has been, until the last three decades, a predominantly southern party, and until the late sixties, was made up of people who had no use for civil rights of any sort.

this is really sad. this lameoid should look at county-by county electoral maps, especially those that represent degrees of candidatal support by shades of purple. we are all intermingled, all over the country. this kind of hate will lose us the white house in 2008 and beyond. *there is NO time for this, even in catharsis.*

*and the north was no prize pig itself: benjamin franklin owned slaves. (!)
