winter of crows - page 11 (charity is late)

i won't say my friend , on whom charity is based, has a problem with punctuality, but i have known her, on occasion, to be late to work. Back In The Day, late to work could have been quite a Long Time, as you see it here. nowadays the reasons for any tardiness are pretty simple and direct, but long ago, they could become quite byzantine, as you can see here . . .

the back of the place that must not be named on troost was a wasteland of cigarette butts . . . people liked to hang out back there . . . a lot . . . and i have very sharp recollections of being the only person on the floor whilst two or three or four people congregated on the perpetual rotating smoke break. my interruptions of these breaks weren't always appreciated. but hey, after being yelled at by the customers wasn't my bag, either.

the manager there is steve. steve is the only person whose made into sparrow's fall as a character with his own name. he was the best manager i ever had, and when he left, we knew there was a problem with the company. what followed was a long, slow autumn that finally plunged into icy winter a couple of years ago. if i had known then what i knew now, and had my current outlook on life then, and were drawing at the time . . . i would have been a whole hell of a lot happier. while it lasted.

but if wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets, yes?

i really like that ashcan there. i don't think i could draw a better one today.
