kansas city comic artist activity updates week of 01.29.06 - 02.04.06

aaron williams' PS238 is coming out. bill hook is in the preview section this month. chris garrett enters the dungeon; but his progress is slowed by the moonfall comic.

daniel spottswood revamps his site and his characters in the preview section confront the thing that is the deli and the sandwich engineer therein. dustin hoffman begins an attack. greg smallwood's blog is here. the mysterious heavy water does more work.

jason arnett brings us the risers archive and gives me good bird flu news. maybe. joel pfannenstiel offers 250% less suck. battle rages in john fortman's fallen angels. kelly sue deconnick raises an eyebrow at miller highlife. kyle strahm gives us more clockwork and crib notes. mark stinson gives us ghosts and violence. matt fraction is in cupertino; also, the moon smells like gunpowder. (take note, moonfall folks!). michael buckley--well, he means well anyway.

parrish baker didn't have much to say this week. rob schamberger to the contrary did. scott ziolko's abe awesome is available at rock bottom comics.* seth wolfshorndl has a new blog. stephanie iser updates both blogs. steven sanders is lining up another publisher. travis fox pimps the oscars in the preview section.

the boards were extremely busy with all categories updated.

all you blogspot people, it should probably come as no surprise that blogspot/blogger's down this evening, so i'll have to amend your updates later.

BLOGSPOT UPDATE: some alarming photos from dennis hopeless, greg smallwood covers the gamut, lee leslie works on more royals stuff, and shane thayer honors dormancy.

first friday

well, as usual first fridays lived to disappoint. from the paint splotches by scot sinclair at the leedy-voulkos in Old Leedyville to the uninteresting pottery at the Pi Gallery next to grinders in New Leedyville, it was a dull as dishwater night. almost the only things we liked was allie's knitted cats at the Farm Gallery, the artomat at the Pi, and john raux's* miniature paintings at jacob's well.

the only up side was that the crowds were very thin, and the evening chilly. still, lots of changes all over Old Leedyville . . . and New Leedyville seems thin and sickly yet.

my new favorite comics website . . .

. . . is dave's long box. dave is one funny guy. i don't read marvel or DC or even dark horse, but i know enough about their universes to go by. but even if i didn't, i'd find this stuff funny.

i can't stop reading it!

for your amusement

my work, such as it is, was used in a class at perdue in 2003 taught by one tof eklund. on this page his students (communications majors, i believe,) comment and criticize on several comics, including mine. as a whole, they did not approve of sparrow's fall artistically or understand it conceptually. i feel quite vindicated.

kansas city comic artist activity updates week of 01.22.06 - 01.28.06

you know the old trick to make family circus and marmaduke funny? you switch their captions. it works about half the time--better than the succes rate of both comics played straight. well, aaron williams points out a link to a similar method for making garfield interesting. (and almost funny.) bonnie leigh begs you to join blingo. dan jacobson supports dorian's meme. i hope you are following daniel spottswood's comic in the preview, because it's getting tough for his characters--tougher than usual, i should say. dustin hoffman uses his Wacom, or an 05 micron. (let's start a pool on that!)

greg gildersleeve asks you what comic characters you identify with. (why, turok, son of stone, of course! the original everyman. [what the hell m i talking about?]) greg smallwood's comic in the preview this week focussed on exhibitionism at the mall . . . i hope that no friends were hurt in the making of that comic. heavy water puts up a bunch of new pages. he's really, really good. jason arnett gives us "risers" and bigfoot. all hell breaks loose in john fortman country.

kelly sue deconnick knits while captain applejack recuperates. kevin gritzke has less happy dog news, whilst wolverine is ripped in half by the hulk. kyle strahm has a cover. michael buckley gives us his final piece for life of pi. in keeping with animal sadness, mike sullivan catblogs a beautiful little drawing.

parrish baker . . . well, you're here, so i guess you know how that's playing out. rob schamberger keeps up the excitement. gas grenades! stephanie iser updates yalibrarian. travis fox comments on the booth babe ban at e3.

the boards were modestly busy with all categories updated save websites and, once again, show & tell.

pretty slow week, all in all.

kansas city comic artist activity updates week of 01.15.06 - 01.21.06

aaron williams' nodwick 31 is coming out soon--yay! and he refers us to a completely diseased version of spiderman from japan.

possibly because i am a racist bastard i haven't ever thought to put alonzo washington in the List; but i have now. i first encountered his comics work in the early 1990s . . . they look rather like they did then, but just a bit crazier. i recommend rummaging around through his site at length. i 'specially like his portrayal of local tv news executives in his expose of the precious doe case. i can just hear larry moore saying 'suck head activist' etc. in my head. however . . . . i think alonzo misses the mark here . . . . tv news here ate this story up and couldn't get enough of it or him.

from AR's site: "Lunar-Circuitry is undergoing renovation and redesign. Please be patient as everything gets posted. Until then stop by one of the following subsites . . . " b. clay moore waxes sports-philosophical. byron dunn is blogging slowly and sporadically.

the fight scene over at chris garrett has me waiting for more. what's in that chamber? duane cunningham: go, duane, go! (but steer clear of the zieglerisms!) dustin dade is on the List--two links. dustin hoffman continues to web-comic it. i never much liked web comics: they sacrifice craft for speed, for the most part. heavy water updates with a birthday present.

more "risers" from jason arnett. jeremy mohler discovers chris garrett. john fortman's demi-ferengi continue to act up. kelly sue deconnick reports on dog surgery (successful!) kevin gritzke hates superman; superman hates imports. i like the way kyle strahm draws old people. lee leslie's george bush evolves.

matt fraction talks up lookwell. (the second youtube link in this post . . . . hmmm.) michael buckley uploads some of his sketches for life of pi. parrish baker . . . oy, vey. rob schamberger contends with fountains of urine. oy, vey!

scott hassler provides us with a . . . rather dramatic photo. seth wolfshorndl posts links to comic book podcasts. shaun gray reviews comics and reports the bad gocco news. stephanie iser talks about what yalibrarian is all about. travis fox , who looks just like apolo anton ohno, gives us music picks.

the boards were modestly busy with all categories save welcome, websites, and show & tell (!!) updated..

SKETCH JAM - 2.11.06 @ Roasterie Cafe @ 11:00 AM

Date: Saturday, February 11th, 2006
Time: 11:00 AM
Place: Roasterie Cafe in Brookside.
Moderator: Scott Hassler

The Roasterie has lots of space, plenty of lighting, lots of big comfy chairs, and it has really good coffee.

The first two Sketch Jams went extremely well...according to all involved. Bring a sketchbook, some coffee money, and hang out with other artists...drawing and talking about everything under the sun...

rob's going to be at the Crave next sunday doing an 8-page, 8-hour comic . . . i'll update with a time later, but i should anticipate that it would probably be from noonish/oneish (there's that pesky ish again,) to eightish/nineish until seven or eight, depending on if I break for lunch or not, says rob. . . . i maybeish be there, for at least a portion of the time, but that's yet to be written.

scotty skyrocket

today i saw some precursor sketches for sullivan and schamberger's scotty skyrocket in mike sullivan's sketchbook today* and i'm pretty excited for april to get here. there were some pretty cool looking aliens there, including a nasty, buggy looking one who probably goes drinking with zorak.

mike thinks he has a whole lot of work to do in the next few weeks.
