Clement Hurd update

in the email box this afternoon regarding the clement hurd imbroglio . . .

Goodnight Moon is an enduring children's classic because of its timeless and lasting images. HarperCollins is proud of our dedication to ensure that this and other beloved children's books never fall out of print due to neglect. As you know, as part of this process, we recently retouched the jacket photograph of Clement Hurd because we were concerned that the cigarette could send a potentially harmful message about smoking to children - a concern that did not exist many years ago when the photo was first used. We understand that this change has caused some concern, and we have replaced this photo with a new, unaltered picture of Mr. Hurd that does not include a cigarette. This picture is now included on our most recent reprint of Goodnight Moon. We have been working closely with Thacher Hurd and the Estate of Margaret Wise Brown throughout this process to ensure it is handled with care and respect.

Thank you for your support of Goodnight Moon. This book truly is a national treasure, and we always appreciate your valuable feedback about our titles.

which was a response to my email--

I disapprove of Harper Collins' decision to manipulate the photo of Clement Hurd, illustrator of Goodnight Moon, to hide the fact he was a smoker. I do not see what it gains anyone to distort reality.
