Clement Hurd--smoking or nonsmoking section?

bonnie and i were at the reading reptile the other day waiting for her post-root canal prescriptions when pete cowdin mentioned goodnight reality to us:

Below are two photographs of Clement Hurd, the illustrator of Goodnight Moon. The image on the left is the original photograph that has adorned the back of the trade hardcover edition of Goodnight Moon for over 50 years. The image on the right is the new, altered version of the photograph, in which the cigarette that once resided in Clement Hurd's hand has been digitally removed by the publisher.

i remember the hubbub when national geographic altered a shot of the pyramids to fit two of them on one cover, and instances of news media manipulation of photos--for spite, for drama, and for interest continue to be pointed out with shuts of anger whenever they appear to this day.

i don't see why harper collins should be exempt from respecting reality, and i encourage you to go vote on the issue, and then email the folks responsible. it isn't a matter of smoking v. nonsmoking, which decision someone at harper collins wants to make for us. it's a matter of intellectual honesty, which go knows is not in great supply these days.

if intellectual honesty has to start in a pack of cigarettes, then so be it.

as usual, tony has a great take on it. (his post reminded me to check this business out.)
