Episode 2 - Omne initium est dificile

Continuing from the last episode, Negi had just used his magic to save Nodoka from her fall. Even though his magic is supposed to be kept a secret, Asuna happened to walk by and saw him use it. As Nodoka comes to, Asuna grabs Negi and brings him over to a tree area nearby and confronts him about he just did.

"What the hell are you?! A Superman?! An Esper?! Or perhaps a NewType?!"
"I'm not anything of that suspicious sort!"

Negi accidentally slips and says that he's a mage. As Asuna interrogates him further about his use of magic, Negi begs her not to tell anyone, for if anyone finds out, it would be very bad for him. As angry as Asuna is right now, she doesn't care. In order to prevent word from getting out, he'll have to erase her memory. Asuna gets a bit worried and tries to talk her way out. Negi casts the spell as Takahata walks by and finds them. Instead of erasing her memory, Negi accidentally erases her panties. This day just got worse for Asuna.

Utterly humiliated in front of Takahata, Asuna later throttles Negi for more info about why he's even here in the first place. Negi has come here as part of his training to become a Magister Magi.

Takahata had taken a walk on campus with Evangeline and Chachamaru and were talking about Negi. He asks Evangelline what she thinks of Negi.

"Well, it's not like you tried to hide it."
"I didn't try to tell you either."

Nodoka bumps into Takahata and falls down. He offers to help her up, but Nodoka gets nervous and runs off after apologizing to him.
The situation between Negi and Asuna had finally calmed down. During their walk, Negi explains the situation to Asuna and about his training as a mage. Apparently, he could be turned into an ermine if his identity is revealed publicly. Asuna promises to keep his mage abilities a secret on one condition: that he help her to get Takahata-sensei, since she has a tremendous crush on him. Since he's still in training, there are some magic spells he can do, and some that are too advanced for him at this point. He is able to fly in the air and read minds.

Asuna had brought Negi to a surprise welcome party that the class had planned for him. Everyone gives Negi a warm welcome. Party Time!
With the party underway, Negi had a chance to talk with more of the students in a relaxed setting. Konoka asked Asuna what had kept her. Obviously, she'd rather not say. As she sits down, she remembers that she didn't have any panties on, jumping up out of the cold chair immediately. Konoka asks if something was wrong. Asuna plays it off and tells her that she forgot something in the room.

Everyone is having a good time for the most part. Negi gets to meet more of his students while enjoying the food, drinks, and even a sparring match between Lingshen Chao and Fei Ku, Makie Sasaki showing her gymnastics performance, the cheerleading trio, and various other talents as entertainment. Nodoka however is standing by herself in the back of the room, thinking about when Negi had caught her from the fall earlier. Even though she's usually afraid of being near guys, for some reason, it didn't feel strange being around Negi.

Eye Catch / Halfway Point

Asuna taps Negi on the shoulder and pulls him aside to ask him to go ahead and work his magic to read Takahata-sensei's mind. Negi walks over to talk to him. Takahata asks him how things are going with the class so far. During the conversation, Negi puts his hand on Takahata's forehead and asks him what he thinks of Asuna. Not exactly being subtle. While he also has positive things to say about her, Negi also finds out that he remembers her earlier without her panties. Ack! She asks him to go back and ask about before then. Negi checks again and says that he remembers the bear panties. That's not any better for her to hear. She tells him to forget about and walks off in a gloomy state. Negi tries to console her in some way, but is interrupted by Makie. Some of the girls are interested in what Negi's birthday and blood type are. While everyone is still having a good time, he can't help but worry about Asuna.

It's time to wrap up the party. As everyone heads their own ways home or to the dorm, Saotome and Chizuru ask Negi where he's staying at. Come to think of it, no one ever told him where he was going to be living. Konoka takes his arm and says that he'll be staying with her and Asuna in their room.

Depressed, Asuna stares at the ceiling and hears Konoka come in. She is surprised to find Negi with her. She explains that Negi will be staying with them by her grandfather's suggestion, Asuna is utterly opposed to this. Konoka tries to convince her, but Negi assures her it's okay. He'll just stay at Takahata's place.

As Negi takes a walk through the empty campus, the class roster book falls out of his bag. He remembers when he was getting ready to leave Wales how worried his sister and Anya were about his going to Japan to become a teacher. His ambition is to become a Magister Magi, just like him...
Although both Nekane and Anya were somewhat opposed to his decision, they believe in him and wish him well and to always remain strong.
Early the next morning, Asuna had gotten up earlier and informed Konoka that she needed to start on her paper delivery route. Asuna had felt bad about how she treated Negi as she stood there sulking for a moment. As she was making her way to work, she found Negi searching around a patch of clovers. She was surprised to find him out here. He had been searching for four-leaved clovers so that he could make a love potion for her to make up for what happened yesterday.

"I've caused a lot of trouble between you and Takahata-sensei, and on top of that, I'm your homeroom teacher after all. I'm still inexperienced, so I don't know yet if I'll be able to make an effective love potion, but.."
"Forget it. You can't just rely on things like magic and incantations all your life. If you love somebody, you should just tell them yourself."

Instead of the love potion, she has him be her practice partner for her confession of love to Takahata-sensei. Negi agrees to help her. She picks him up and puts him on one of the steps so that he stands taller than her. Asuna undoes her hair as she begins her profession of love.

"Takahata-sensei...I love you. I love you, sensei!" Negi notices that Asuna in a way looks just like his sister. "Does it bother you that I love you?"
"N-no."
"I guess it won't work out with somebody like me, after all."
"That's not it at all..."
Asuna turns around and steps up to the same level as him. She puts her hands on his face and looks at him.
"Can we practice this all the way to the end?"
Negi doesn't say anything.
"Close your eyes..."
As Asuna leans in for a kiss, suddenly she grabs Negi's cheeks and stretches his face.
"Gotcha! Aha-ha-ha-ha! You really thought I was going to kiss you, huh?! Your face was so red! You're really a precocious kid aren't you?!"
"Ah! That's so mean Asuna!"
"Well that's retribution for what you put me through."

Asuna brought Negi back to the room. She tells Konoka that it turns out that he doesn't have any living arrangements, so he'll be staying with them. He can sleep on the sofa. She takes a thermometer to make sure he's not sick. Time for her to go to work. Konoka jokes with her saying that even if getting Takahata-sensei is impossible for her, going after little Negi is bold. Asuna face faults. She tries to explain to Konoka that she felt bad and is just being nice. As Negi is hearing this, he takes out his roster book and changes what he wrote about Asuna.

"She is actually a good person after some consideration." is what he now wrote.
