“My child, listen carefully. The story that I’m about to tell you is very important,” the unknown narrator foretells from high up in the sky. As the monologue continues, the scene abruptly ends and changes to a young man in with long gray hair covering parts of his face, a black shirt, blue jeans and a duffle bag, getting off a bus.

This traveler calls out for a ramen set due to hungry appetite. In the process, he brought the attention of a group of little kids upon himself. Explaining that he does not have the money to purchase his ramen set, he performs a unique puppet show using no strings whatsoever. Even though they were impressed with the traveler’s skills, the children criticize the show for being boring and uncool, thus refusing to pay. The traveler gets upset and screamed, scaring the group of children. In response, one of them kicks away the traveler’s doll and they all ran away. Shortly there after, the traveler faints under the hot summer sun.

Opening Credits/Opening Theme

The traveler wakes up screaming for his ramen set, while scaring away the nearby seagulls. As he surveys the beach in front of him, he notices a young schoolgirl standing next to him with her long blond hair and school uniform swaying in the wind. The music switches to a calm piano solo as the two first see each other.

The young girl begins talking to the traveler; however, no response is given. She runs off to buy some juice for her new friend. On the way back, she trips yet she manages to return with a smile on her face. The traveler accepts her offer and begins to sip his drink. Soon, he spits out the gooey concentrated peach juice in disgust. He then squeezes the box allowing all of the juice to spill on the floor, concerning the young girl. She mentions that drink is her favorite.

As the traveler walks away from the beach, the young girl begins to follow him suggesting fun things to do with her new friend. Along the way he noticed that his puppet is missing and went back to the beach to find it. Toiling under the hot sun, the two began searching to find the traveler’s puppet. They soon noticed a black crow carrying it around so the young girl chases the crow around making it drop the doll.

After recovering the traveler’s doll, they began to introduce one another. The young schoolgirl cheerfully said that her name is Misuzu Kamio. Calmly, the traveler mentioned that his name is Yukito Kunisaki.

Blinded by hunger, Yukito followed Misuzu home where he can eat ramen. As he eats, Misuzu began talking more about herself. She is an only child being raised by a single mother, however due to her work, her mother comes home late at night. Concerned about lodging, Yukito announced that he would leave and sleep outside after finishing his meal. Then Misuzu recommended that he stay with her if her mother approves.

As Misuzu does her math homework, she questions the usefulness of quadratic functions (much like any other student). In the process, a loud crashing noise signals the arrival of Misuzu’s mother.

Asking her mother if Yukito can stay, she quickly rejects the idea. She then retorted by asking what kind of relation he has with Misuzu. Misuzu helps Yukito out by holding up a cue card telling him to explain to her mom that he is a classmate. However, Misuzu’s mom is wise enough to see that Yukito is too old to be a student. Quickly, Misuzu changes her sign.

“Don’t fall for me,” Yukito said with devilish charm.
“As if I would!” Misuzu’s mother shouted as she hits Yukito with a paper fan. As Misuzu quietly apologizes to Yukito, her mother acknowledges Yukito’s courage by hitting on her so she allows him to stay under two conditions: he sleeps in the shed and has a round of sake with her.

With alcohol reveling her mom’s outgoing side, she begins to talk about a past love and pokes Yukito’s eyes in the process.

Then it is Yukito’s turn to entertain. He whips out his puppet and does a free performance with Misuzu please but her mother gets bored of the routine. Disappointed, Misuzu’s mother invites Yukito for another round of drinks. She then introduces herself a Haruko Kamio. She begins to ask questions about Yukito. She finds out that he is traveling searching for person.

Pleased to know that Yukito is a person that she can trust, she asks if Yukito can look over Misuzu because she worries about her reckless personality. In addition, she wants Yukito to stop Misuzu’s habit of saying “Gao” whenever she messes up or on the verge of crying. She explains that it first started with Misuzu’s fascination of dinosaurs and saying “Gao” is a way of imitating them.

Halfway Point / Break

The next mourning, Misuzu explains that she must attend supplemental classes (summer school as some people call it) during her summer vacation. Yukito begins to walk with Misuzu, bluntly explaining that he will look after her so that she does not do anything stupid. Before school, the two sit atop the ledge where they first met. Conveniently, it’s across the way from Misuzu’s school. She draws a map for Yukito of some local hotspots where can perform his show. However, Yukito soon realizes the usefulness of Misuzu’s dinosaur-filled, 2 street, hand-drawn map.

A cute dog soon catches the attention of Yukito. He began to perform his routine; however, the dog runs away with the puppet. In a fury, Yukito begins to chase after the dog all over the town. The chase led to a bridge where Yukito missed the dog as it barrel rolled to safety and Yukito into a creek. Looking up, he meets yet another schoolgirl, this time with short blue hair and a yellow ribbon on her wrist.

She then explains that her dog, Potato, just wanted to have a little fun. She helps Yukito out of the waterbed and they introduced each other. Her name is Kano Krishima. After talking for a bit, she part ways to attend school.

“Have you ever wondered what you could do if you had magical powers?” Kano innocently asked before leaving. As Yukito could not find an answer, she leaves cheerfully.

After a failed day in Yukito’s puppet show, he picks up Misuzu from her school. The two headed to a train station, another Misuzu hotspot. Unfortunately, the station has been closed down and no one was around. Soon they noticed one of Misuzu’s classmates blowing bubbles. The softly spoken Minagi Tohno politely bows as she talks to them.

As quick as they introduced each other, Minagi’s friend, hyperactive Michiru, knocks down Yukito as an innocent by standard on her way to Minagi. When Yukito got up, Michiru begins to joke, implying that Yukito may be a pervert since he is hanging out with girls younger than he is. After Yukito and Michiru traded a few blows, Minagi suggests that she would make her leave.

As the day ends under the golden sky, Yukito and Misuzu are once again on the ledge overlooking the vast ocean. Misuzu explains her feelings about how the sky and ocean makes people feel comfortable.

As an aside, Yukito said, “For me that was the beginning of a summer as short as a star’s twinkle and as long as eternity.”
