Thomas Paine's Rights of Man Christopher HitchensDewey: 320 DateAdded: 02 Oct 2008 Summary: Christopher Hitchens, the #1 "New York Times" best-selling author of "God Is Not Great" has been called a Tom Paine for our times, and in this addition to the Books that Changed the World Series, he vividly introduces Paine and his "Declaration of the Rights of Man", the world’s foremost defense of democracy. Inspired by his outrage at Edmund Burke’s attack on the French Revolution, Paine’s text is a passionate defense of man’s inalienable rights, and the key to his reputation. Ever since the day of publication in 1791, "Declaration of the Rights of Man" has been celebrated, criticized, maligned, suppressed, and co-opted, but in "Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man", Hitchens marvels at its forethought and revels in its contentiousness. Famous as a polemicist and provocative commentator, Hitchens is a political descendent of the great pamphleteer. In this engaging work he demonstrates how Thomas Paine’s book forms the philosophical cornerstone of the United States of America, and how “in a time when both rights and reason are under attack, the life and writing of Thomas Paine will always be part of the arsenal on which we shall need to depend.”

America's Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women, and Forgotten Founders Who Shaped a Nation Kenneth C. DavisReaderRating: 4.5 (3 votes) DateAdded: 16 May 2008 Summary: Kenneth C. Davis, author of the phenomenal "New York Times" bestseller "Don't Know Much About History", presents a collection of extraordinary stories, each detailing an overlooked episode that shaped the nation's destiny and character. Davis's dramatic narratives set the record straight, busting myths and bringing to light little-known but fascinating facts from a time when the nation's fate hung in the balance. Spanning a period from the Spanish arrival in America to George Washington's inauguration in 1789, "America's Hidden History" details these episodes, among others: The story of the first real Pilgrims in America, who were wine-making French Huguenots, not dour English Separatists The coming-of-age story of Queen Isabella, who suggested that Columbus pack the moving mess hall of pigs that may have spread disease to many Native Americans The long, bloody relationship between the Pilgrims and Indians that runs counter to the idyllic scene of the Thanksgiving feast The little-known story of George Washington as a headstrong young soldier who committed a war crime, signed a confession, and started a war! Full of color, intrigue, and human interest, "America's Hidden History" is an iconoclastic look at America's past, connecting some of the dots between history and today's headlines, proving why Davis is truly America's Teacher.

| 393 | Susan Jacoby | The Age of American Unreason | Hardcover | 384 | 01 Feb 2008 | Pantheon | History |
The Age of American Unreason Susan JacobyReaderRating: 4.0 (62 votes) DateAdded: 08 May 2008 Summary: Combining historical analysis with contemporary observation, Susan Jacoby dissects a new American cultural phenomenon--one that is at odds with our heritage of Enlightenment reason and with modern, secular knowledge and science. With mordant wit, she surveys an anti-rationalist landscape extending from pop culture to a pseudo-intellectual universe of "junk thought." Disdain for logic and evidence defines a pervasive malaise fostered by the mass media, triumphalist religious fundamentalism, mediocre public education, a dearth of fair-minded public intellectuals on the right and the left, and, above all, a lazy and credulous public. Jacoby offers an unsparing indictment of the American addiction to infotainment--from television to the Web--and cites this toxic dependency as the major element distinguishing our current age of unreason from earlier outbreaks of American anti-intellectualism and anti-rationalism. With reading on the decline and scientific and historical illiteracy on the rise, an increasingly ignorant public square is dominated by debased media-driven language and received opinion. At this critical political juncture, nothing could be more important than recognizing the "overarching crisis of memory and knowledge" described in this impassioned, tough-minded book, which challenges Americans to face the painful truth about what the flights from reason has cost us as individuals and as a nation.

The Courtier and the Heretic: Leibniz, Spinoza, and the Fate of God in the Modern World Matthew StewartReaderRating: 4.5 (31 votes) DateAdded: 10 Jul 2007 Summary: "A colorful reinterpretation . Stewart's wit and profluent prose make this book a fascinating read.""Publishers Weekly", starred review Philosophy in the late seventeenth century was a dangerous business. No careerist could afford to know the reclusive, controversial philosopher Baruch de Spinoza. Yet the wildly ambitious genius Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who denounced Spinoza in public, became privately obsessed with Spinoza's ideas, wrote him clandestine letters, and ultimately met him in secret. "In refreshingly lucid terms" ("Booklist") Matthew Stewart "rescues both men from a dusty academic shelf, bringing them to life as enlightened humans" ("Library Journal") central to the religious, political, and personal battles that gave birth to the modern age. Both men put their faith in the guidance of reason, but one spent his life defending a God he may not have believed in, while the other believed in a God who did not need his defense. Ultimately, the two thinkers represent radically different approaches to the challenges of the modern era. They stand for a choice that we all must make.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex Nathaniel PhilbrickReaderRating: 4.5 (250 votes) DateAdded: 10 May 2007 Summary: The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the "Titanic" was in the twentieth. In 1819, the "Essex" left Nantucket for the South Pacific with twenty crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival. Nathaniel Philbrick uses little-known documents-including a long-lost account written by the ship's cabin boy-and penetrating details about whaling and the Nantucket community to reveal the chilling events surrounding this epic maritime disaster. An intense and mesmerizing read, "In the Heart of the Sea" is a monumental work of history forever placing the Essex tragedy in the American historical canon.

A History Of The World In Six Glasses Tom StandageReaderRating: 4.5 (30 votes) DateAdded: 27 Dec 2006 Summary: From beer to Coca-Cola, the six drinks that have helped shape human history. Throughout human history. certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period. "A History of the World in 6 Glasses" tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola. Beer was first made in the Fertile Crescent and by 3000 B.C.E. was so important to Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used to pay wages. In ancient Greece wine became the main export of her vast seaborne trade, helping spread Greek culture abroad. Spirits such as brandy and rum fueled the Age of Exploration, fortifying seamen on long voyages and oiling the pernicious slave trade. Although coffee originated in the Arab world, it stoked revolutionary thought in Europe during the Age of Reason, when coffeehouses became centers of intellectual exchange. And hundreds of years after the Chinese began drinking tea, it became especially popular in Britain, with far-reaching effects on British foreign policy. Finally, though carbonated drinks were invented in 18th-century Europe they became a 20th-century phenomenon, and Coca-Cola in particular is the leading symbol of globalization. For Tom Standage, each drink is a kind of technology, a catalyst for advancing culture by which he demonstrates the intricate interplay of different civilizations. You may never look at your favorite drink the same way again.

The Cholera Years: The United States in 1832, 1849, and 1866 Charles E. RosenbergReaderRating: 5.0 (4 votes) DateAdded: 10 Dec 2006 Summary: Cholera was the classic epidemic disease of the nineteenth century, as the plague had been for the fourteenth. Its defeat was a reflection not only of progress in medical knowledge but of enduring changes in American social thought. Rosenberg has focused his study on New York City, the most highly developed center of this new society. Carefully documented, full of descriptive detail, yet written with an urgent sense of the drama of the epidemic years, this narrative is as absorbing for general audiences as it is for the medical historian. In a new Afterword, Rosenberg discusses changes in historical method and concerns since the original publication of "The Cholera Years". "A major work of interpretation of medical and social thought . . . this volume is also to be commended for its skillful, absorbing presentation of the background and the effects of this dread disease."--I.B. Cohen, "New York Times" ""The Cholera Years" is a masterful analysis of the moral and social interest attached to epidemic disease, providing generally applicable insights into how the connections between social change, changes in knowledge and changes in technical practice may be conceived."--Steven Shapin, "Times Literary Supplement" "In a way that is all too rarely done, Rosenberg has skillfully interwoven medical, social, and intellectual history to show how medicine and society interacted and changed during the 19th century. The history of medicine here takes its rightful place in the tapestry of human history."--John B. Blake, "Science"

The Deaths of the Cold War Kings: The Assassinations of Diem & JFK Bradley S. O'Leary, Edward LeeDateAdded: Summary: FACT: President John Fitzgerald Kennedy vigorously supported the coup d'etat that resulted in the assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem, the duly elected President of South Vietnam. Twenty-one days later, Kennedy himself was assassinated. FACT: 48 hours after JFK's murder in Dallas, Texas, the FBI and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service secretly deported a French assassin out of the country. This information was never revealed to the public, nor was it ever reported to the Warren Commission. FACT: The deportation order came from the Office of the Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy. This book will show you the actual CIA document which proves the above, plus many more never-before-seen documents, interviews, and evidence that may well change everything you ever thought about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This book will reveal, first, the critical blunder which turned the Vietnam conflict from a small-scale advisory effort into a catastrophe that cost the lives of 58,000 Americans. Secondly, this book will detail information that has been swept aside for the last thirty-seven years and present astonishing new evidence that implicates the French global heroin syndicate, the U.S. Mob, and the executive branch of the South Vietnamese government in the tragedy of November 22, 1963. Lastly, this book will show you the history of the sniper on Dealey Plaza ñ not Lee Harvey Oswald but a French World-War-Two-hero turned-heroin-smuggler named Michel Victor Mertz.
