Summary: England in the mid 1950s is not the same as it was. The powers that be have instituted...some changes. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen have been disbanded and disavowed, and the country is under the control of an iron-fisted regime. Now, after many years, the still youthful Mina Murray and a rejuvenated Allan Quatermain return and are in search of some answers. Answers that can only be found in a book buried deep in the vaults of their old headquarters, a book that holds the key to the hidden history of the League throughout the ages: The Black Dossier. As Allan and Mina delve into the details of their precursors, some dating back centuries, they must elude their dangerous pursuers who are Hell-bent on retrieving the lost manuscript... and ending the League once and for all.

Summary: Warren Ellis' hugely popular web comic, Freakangels, is here, collected in print for the first time in this gorgeous, full-color trade paperback! Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years later, the world ended. This is the story of what happened next. So welcome to Whitechapel, some years from now, just barely above ground in a flooded England, where a clan of eleven strange people with purple eyes - the Freakangels - have carved out some sort of a life for themselves. A life that starts to show big cracks when a girl called Alice from Manchester turns up with a shotgun and a grievance, having met the lost, prodigal last Freakangel, who had very different ideas about what they should do with themselves and this flooded future England. Because the Freakangels have a big secret: Something very bad is their fault.

Summary: Proving that mainstream comics could be infused with past literary/cultural ideals and still be bestsellers, the America's Best Comics imprint took the dilapidated superhero genre and created three vastly entertaining hybrids with Tom Strong, Promethea and Top Ten. Now, a stunning coup de grace is delivered with this masterful pairing of Victorian adventure fiction's greatest characters and the old war-horse of the super-group. With the stunning "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", it would be no exaggeration to say that Alan Moore has produced a near-perfect piece of adventure fiction that is clever, literate, rich with excitement and hard to put down.
It's 1898 and at the behest of M, the mysterious head of the secret Service, Campion Bond is dispatched to procure the services of Miss Mina Murray (nee Harker), adventurer Allan Quartermain, "Science-Pirate" Captain Nemo, Henry Jekyll (and his monstrous alter ego) and Hawley Griffin (a.k.a. the Invisible Man). Together, they must combat an insidious threat that will decide supremacy of the London skies, but their success may unleash a far greater threat. With no shortage of action, Moore and O' Neill sustain a high level of suspense, intrigue, mystery and terrific wit that all contribute to an indispensable read. O'Neill's art, so memorable in "Marshal Law", produces a London filled with vivid, magnificent architecture and a malevolent atmosphere ripe with thrills and danger. An unmitigated triumph--pure and simple. "--Danny Graydon"

Summary: I don't usually write into these things but I had to quickly comment on the John Q. Public "vhspreowner" review. First of all I have a hard time understanding how he got that Ellis hates himself. Also I've read all the Planetarys so far and don't see huge problems with the dialog between men and women. Maybe in Transmetropolitan but that's a different story entirely. (I love that book too btw). Lastly being a writer and editor did anyone edit his review? Much in the way of spelling and grammar problems unless it's a hip new way of writing that I don't get. Not sure if this kind of thing gets posted but I'm doing it anywho. Gotta stick up for Ellis!

Summary: Warren Ellis improves on his already outstanding stories and characters in the second collection of "Planetary: The Fourth Man". While scraping their way through their investigations, the three archaeologists of mystery, enigmatic themselves, deal with their own past and learn more about the creepy metahumans lurking behind practically every oddity on the planet. Ellis seems to take pleasure in turning superheroic icons inside out. Fans will find references and deconstructions from the Golden Age to the post-postmodern comics world. John Cassaday's penciling adapts itself well to the stories, giving intimate barroom chats and epic battles against giant ants equal credibility. While reading "Planetary", one gets the sense that superhero comics really do have somewhere to go after being so thoroughly demolished in the '80s and '90s--and that we'd do well to keep reading. Summary: First off, many of the readers who seemed disappointed with this are mostly fans of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book. The style is very different and is better suited for fans of The Ultimates.
I actually bought this entire mini in comic form last week and was really impressed. There's good pacing here and little action outbursts and nice splash pages to keep the action hungry satisfied. The art is great, especially during the climactic battle on the White House lawn.Hairsine delivers the goods with lots of details and amazing panels to leave you drueling.
One thing about Bendis' style is that he features alot of dialogue. And most of the time,it's a good thing mostly used for set-up and characterization. This is meant to be a big-time showdown between a team of heroes and baddies. But as generic as it sounds,Bendis make things alot more thick and gives it more depth than that.If you have read The Ultimates, you will have a better understanding of many of the government aspects going on here, but even if you haven't,it's quite easy to comprehend. The villains here, especially Osborne and Octavius, are portrayed as intelligent scientists who hunger for nothing but revenge and power.Their motives are quite clear, and nothing too out of this world or far fetched.
This is a truly entertaining super-hero epic from Marvel's Ultimate line. This would be a great book to read for those looking to get back into comics. It might be wise to read some volumes of Ultimate Spidey and The Ultimates first, but even if you haven't,it's still an awesome read.I myself don't read USM and still understood what was going on.This book is highly recommended for anyone looking for a good epic super-hero read.
I also recommend
The Ultimates:Super Human,The Ultimates:Homeland Security, and The Ultimates:Gods and Monsters if you liked this.

Summary: I had read the Dark Knight Returns years before I picked up this edition, but I can't say that I'm disappointed in having both. First off the quality of this edition is a stellar leather binding which can take the roughest wear and tear.
The contents include two of the best comic/graphic novels ever done (Dark Knight Returns - An aging Batman comes out of retirement to get the world back on track and get in his fix of butt kicking ; Batman: Year One - More of Jim Gordon's story intermixed with the Batman origin within the shared background of early Gotham City.) The third, Santa Claus: Wanted Dead or Alive isn't bad, however it's just filler compared to the first two more iconic offerings in this work.
A couple of pages of behind the scenes discussion with Frank Miller round out this offering making it a must if you have neither Dark Knight Returns or Year One.

Summary: Simply put, Elseworlds graphic novels take familiar comic book characters and place them in altered realities. Here, we have Batman and his diabolical enemy, The Joker, in "The Wild". The Wild is a place of sorcery and mystical legends. The "Dark Joker" is a maniacal wizard set out to obtain an ancient power and reign in all of his madness over the people. The "Bat-man" is a winged creature-like humanoid that, through his bloodline, is destined to protect The Wild from the Joker and his evil army of barbaric followers. And though the line between good and evil can at times be blurred, these foes are determined to do what they've come to accomplish.
Elseworlds comics are obviously a lot of fun, as pretty much every rule is thrown out the window and the only limit is the writer's and artist's imagination. While I don't believe Batman: Dark Joker - The Wild is even as good as most normal Batman vs Joker stories set in the classic Gotham City, I do believe that it stands well on its own as quite an interesting piece of work. It takes everything we love about the two characters and warps it into a gruesome yet often times poetic story. Through both the writing and the artwork, there seems to be an underlying beauty beneath the brutality. It's not extremely hard to follow, but the graphic violence and dark themes are certainly unsuitable for children. And that's one thing that really drives it home. No mercy. This is a pure, to-the-core battle between two iconic characters in a world full of a strange yet engaging atmosphere. All in all, it's definitely worth a purchase for any true fan of Batman and/or the Joker.

Summary: "Sin City" launched the long-running, critically acclaimed series of comics novels by Frank Miller. Having worked on some of the most important comic books in the 1980s, including Marvel Comics's "Daredevil" and the influential Batman graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns", Miller was already a heavy-weight cartoonist, but he hit his stride with "Sin City". It gave him the freedom that doesn't come when working on someone else's characters. While the art isn't as polished as in later books, it is in many ways the quintessential Sin City story: tough-guy Marv finds the girl of his dreams, an incredible beauty named Goldie. But when Goldie is murdered on their first night together, Marv scours the bars and back alleys of Sin City to find her killer in hopes of avenging her death.

Summary: This is NOT an encyclopedia. It's a collection of extremely opinionated articles regarding the Hulk. On top of that, it's a blatant advertisement for the 2003 Hulk flick. It seems the author had to put in a word for the movie in almost every single page. This is not an exaggeration either. The author fills each page with his incredibly tiresome sarcastic wit and utter disrespect for the subject matter that makes the book almost unbearable to read and almost impossible to understand. It reminds me a lot of British Journalism. Is the author British? The author badmouths Hulk creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's early contributions, in some instances calling Kirby's artwork "square" which I find offensive. He provides some nice information on the Hulk film and the classic TV production, but treats the latter contemptuously. There is very little mention of prolific Hulk writer and Icon Peter David. The author seems insistant on disregarding any other incarnation than the famous Savage Hulk. There is little mention of the Grey Hulk (other than the debut issue) or the "Professor" incarnations. In fact the author blatantly states that the Hulks of the 80's and 90's were not the REAL Hulk. And he assumes the authority to say so. I was going to add another star to the rating because of the beautiful reprints that include Hulk #1, but these reprints are available in other collections minus the annoying sarcasm and unwanted opinions.
If you're looking for a thoroughly informative and objective look at the Hulk, look elswhere. If you want to read some jackass giving his un called for opinions, disrespecting the very subject he's writing on, blatantly advertising a new movie (I'm sure he got his share from Universal), trumping his conservative political stances and disregarding any and all information that he doesn't care for, then by all means buy this book.

Summary: Debuting in 1999, Get Fuzzy has rocketed to the top of the charts. Now appearing in more than 200 newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner, the Chicago Tribune, the L.A. Times, the Boston Globe, and the Detroit Free Press, Get Fuzzy has become a hit cartoon with its bitingly funny portrait of single life with pets. And why not? The laughs come fast and furious. Get Fuzzy features Rob Wilco, a single, mild-mannered advertising executive who's the so-called guardian of Bucky and Satchel, anthropomorphic scamps that still live by their animal instincts. Bucky, a temperamental cat who carries a boom box and goes on spending sprees, definitely calls the shots in this eclectic household, while Satchel is a kindly canine with a sensitive soul who tries to remain neutral, even though he bears the brunt of his feline companion's mischief.Between the three of them, the Wilco household faces a whole host of trials and tribulations that classify them as family. Satchel wants his boundaries respected. Bucky refuses to eat vegetables but insists on snarfing up Rob's plants. Rob tries to meet women, but his pets continually subvert his efforts. In every frame, Get Fuzzy depicts the hilarious war between the species, giving the animals an equal footing in hilarious one-upmanship.Get Fuzzy has become the comic strip for everyone who loves their pets with an attitude. That said, Groovitude is Get Fuzzy at its finest.

Summary: Hellboy creator Mike Mignola finally reveals Abe Sapien's bizarre history. Introduced in the first Hellboy book and featured prominently in the film, Abe Sapien has remained one of the most intriguing mysteries of Mignola's celebrated work. The recent Hellboy film steered clear of any origin story for Abe so that the tale could be told in Plague of Frogs. The story of Abe's origins unfolds as the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense try to stop the monstrous frog men from the first Hellboy graphic novel, Seed of Destruction. The plague begins its spread across America, lending an apocalyptic new direction to Mignola's stories.

Summary: i really only have one thing to say. i was a little disappointed that such a great comic was reproduced in such a weak format. the book is set up more like a novel than a comic collection with the paper being of a very low quality. its not bad for the price really but not so great considering that the comics industry has made such an effort to improve the quality of the books they produce. this paper is not even as good as the prestige format paper of the late 80's comics. i just expected more for the high end price. it does have all the great stories and a great cover gallery but it just felt a bit forced together (think of the nick fury steranko tpb $$$). if you have extra money and really love these stories its cheaper to get it this way. if youre a collector i advise buying the individual issues.

Summary: Gary Larson calls "The Complete Far Side", the massive two-volume collection of his "Far Side" cartoons, an "18-pound hernia giver." Sure to give any coffee table a solid workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page "legacy book" is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the popular--and far less weighty--paperback collections).
Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made famous by a particular cartoon, and those begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable "how do you think up these things" conundrum. Before each year's cartoons, Larson provides insight with essays about his childhood, various travels, occupational hazards, and his official rules for dealing with bedtime monsters (which often turned out to be his older brother). Most wonderful is the first essay on how the comic started. (His longtime editor Jake Morrissey's long introduction is a must read on "The Far Side"'s story).
Despite no central characters, it's easy to spot patterns in Larson's wild and wacky cartoons. Animals, insects, and inanimate objects often exhibit all-too-human impulses. Larson's subjects are often in scenes of peril--disasters, visits to hell, and perhaps a hundred cartoons set on a one-palm tree deserted island. It is what Larson's fertile imagination mined from those situations that created fans and enemies for 14 years. (Larson retired at his peak and then went into jazz music). The comics are not indexed (how could they be--first lines? listings of cartoons with cows?); finding a favorite requires a great memory for its publication date. Best simply to peruse the pages of this beautiful collection in which you will certainly find more than a few new chuckles before landing on your beloved Larson sketch. "--Doug Thomas"

Summary: An Excerpt from Bill Watterson's Introduction:
"I've loved comic strips as long as I can remember. As a kid, I knew I wanted to be either a cartoonist or an astronaut. The latter was never much of a possibility, as I don't even like riding in elevators. I kept my options open until seventh grade, but when I stopped understanding math and science, my choice was made. There is great personal satisfaction in attending to detail and quality, and I remain very proud of the standards the strip met day after day. I also liked the responsibility of knowing that, succeed or fail, it was all my own doing. This approach kept the strip very honest and personal--verything having to do with Calvin and Hobbes expressed my own ideas, my own values, my own way. I wrote every word, drew every line, and painted every color. It's a rare gift to find such fulfilling work and I tried to show my appreciation by giving the strip everything I had to offer." Summary: ones, a former agent of MI6, resides in Los Angeles, which is maintained by the US Government as a veritable prison for ex-agents of numerous intelligence organizations. The ex-agents are under almost no circumstances allowed to leave the city, but within it they are legally invisible. There he makes a living as a private investigator, only doing jobs for other members of/within the intelligence community.
After an apparently long record of drunkenness and misconduct within MI6 ("James Bond never urinated on himself"), in lieu of being discharged he was chosen to participate in the "Desolation Test," and was the sole survivor. Little so far is known about the test, though it has been revealed that it involved Jones being strapped to a hospital bed for a full year, without once being allowed to sleep, being fed food intravenously, and being subjected to other tortures and experiments during that time.
The initial story arc ("Made In England") involves the detective aiding an affluent, elderly collector (Colonel Nigh) in retrieving his most beloved asset after its theft: a series smut films produced by and featuring the most prominent dictator from the World War II era. Jones is assisted by an assortment of bizarre companions and ex-intelligence agents, including Robina, a woman skilled in creating robotic miniature explosives, and Emily, who as the result of CIA experiments emits constant pheromones that cause almost animalistic fear and revulsion in people around her (save Jones). Many of the plot points in this first arc, including the aging benefactor with two lustful daughters, are clearly in homage to Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" and other novels.
Unique qualities about Jones, aside from his apparent role in the Desolation Test, are the biohazard symbol brand on the underside of one forearm, a "Desolation 01" brand on the other, his scarred and frail figure and grey skin, chalk white hair, trademark orange trench coat, an oxygen mask, and a pair of goggles. The latter prove to be most useful, as he avoids direct sunlight whenever possible.

Summary: Bucky Katt is a rather obstinate Siamese who constantly battles his "owner" Rob for control of their home. Satchel Pooch, the Labrador-Shar-pei mix who's sweet and lovable, makes a nice lackey for Bucky. Bucky knows he's smarter than everyone else; it's just a matter of convincing the rest of the world. Satchel always tries to do the right thing but very often ends up the brunt of Bucky's antics. Rob Wilco is a bachelor trying to regain household domesticity. Together, this seemingly typical threesome gets into some less-than-typical but hilarious situations. There's never a dull moment at the Wilco residence.
Get Fuzzy, featured in over 500 newspapers worldwide, is one of the most highly lauded cartoons in the country. The National Cartoonists Society named it Best Comic Strip of 2002. Its sidesplitting humor and hilariously illustrated facial nuances appeal to animal lovers everywhere. Bucky and Satchel's words and expressions are what we all picture our beloved pets saying and doing.

Summary: THE SANDMAN, written by New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman, was the most acclaimed comic book title of the 1990s. A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, THE SANDMAN is also widely considered one of the most original and artistically ambitious series of the modern age. By the time it concluded in 1996, it had made significant contributions to the artistic maturity of comic books and become a pop culture phenomenon in its own right.
Now, DC Comics is proud to present this comics classic in an all-new Absolute Edition format. The first of four beautifully designed slipcased volumes, THE ABSOLUTE SANDMAN VOL. 1 collects issues 1-20 of The Sandman and features completely new coloring, approved by the author, on the first 18 issues, as well as a host of never-before-seen extra material, including the complete original Sandman Proposal, a gallery of character designs from Gaiman and the artists who originated the look of the Sandman, and the original script to the World Fantasy Award-winning THE SANDMAN #19, "A Midsummer Night's Dream," together with reproductions of the issue's original pencils by Charles Vess. Also included are a new introduction by DC's president Paul Levitz and a new afterword by Gaiman.

Summary: You should read Volume 1 before you read this. And, as soon as you read Volume 1, then you'll get this, because Transmetropolitan is extremely cool and very amazing.
I really like how Transmetropolitan is set in the future, but it just jumps into the story. There isn't any reference to "...300 years from now, when the government is more corrupt and etc...etc." It just jumps in and tells the story. This book extremely well written and is all about a good story.
I just finished Volume 2 last night, and I ordered the next two volumes today. It comprises issues 4 - 12 of the 60-issue series, so you get a whopping 9 comic books in this graphic novel. I really liked how it seems to do a lot of setup and characterization for the story to come.
And, I thought a cool part of it was where in the future, they've invented cancer suppressants for smokers so that you can smoke all that you want to without getting sick. Not that smoking's cool. I just think it's cool that there are options.
Anyway, please start reading this series if you haven't. I recommend it to everyone! (In the mature audiences demographic, of course.)

Summary: Perfect. No less. When it comes to graphic novels, this is all one could hope for. It is fascinating. Spider's harsh truth seeking, foul mouthed, character is a brilliant creation. In 'Year of the Bastard' Ellis begins -- in very subtle notes -- to reveal a softer side to this character. In his growing relationship with Vita Severn we begin to understand Spider more, and the fate of this relationship at the end of the novel is Spider's key motication for his actions until issue 60. The ideas, political machinations and wit of the book are all brilliant. Read and be amazed.

Summary: It's no wonder he hates it here. Spider Jerusalem, journalist and hero of sorts in Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan, wades through a sewer of poverty and high-tech despair daily in his efforts to understand and report on America. In The New Scum, Ellis contrasts the powerful, in the form of presidential candidates, with the powerless, who are begging and hustling on the streets. The satire is savage and rarely subtle, but the author takes care to show some human warmth lest the comic descend into the nihilism it warns against. The plot, largely secondary to the characters and background events, focuses loosely on Jerusalem's assignment to interview the two candidates, each psychotic and unfit for any office. His bodyguard and personal assistant, meanwhile, discover the terrors of pleasure in a post-nanotech world with unlimited credit. The election-eve climax fully captures the anxiety and depression that come from having no real choice in matters of great importance. Either Ellis or his creation deserves a Pulitzer. --Rob Lightner

Summary: Nobody ever accused Warren Ellis of lacking imagination. The latest collection of the Spider Jerusalem saga, Transmetropolitan: Lonely City, is packed with laser-guided satire and neo-adolescent wish fulfillment in the form of a bowel disruptor. Sliding his story of government manipulation and counter-manipulation between moments of reflection and observation makes Ellis's downbeat ending a bit less nihilistic than it could have been. Despite the gulf separating us from Jerusalem's City, it's not hard to draw parallels between his milieu of police-run riots and state-maintained misery and our own less colorful environment. Lonely City drags the man who's more "anti" than "hero" out into the world he professes to hate and forces him to do something about it, while never descending into the boring comic-book morality he fights daily. --Rob Lightner

Summary: This TPB is a little bit lighter than the extremely dark volumes that came before it -- Spider shakes off his depression and resumes the fight against the exploitative powers that be with new vigor. The absurd (rather than purely black) humor of the early volumes returns, particularly in the hilarious first issue of this volume, in which Spider's life is parodied in a variety of genres... Ellis' comic writing is at its peak here.
As always, however, the comedy and vulgarity are tempered by a genuinely disturbing dystopian vision of a modern Western democracy gone subtly totalitarian. Among the comics being written today, _Transmetropolitan_ is nearly unique in its skillful satirical handling of serious issues.

Summary: This most recent Transmetropolitan collection takes a distinctly darker turn as Spider and his 'filthy assistants' go underground and Spider's health begins to suffer. More than ever before, Ellis' social commentary on his dystopian City hits close to home. Previous collections have satirized the decadence and sloth of modern American life by exaggerating it in daringly hilarious ways, but _Spider's Thrash_ descends to address modern-day social problems more directly. Although the issue on child prostitution presents a still more corrupt and degraded world than the one we live in now, the issue on the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill and their subsequent homelessness is not exaggerated at all. Ellis' demonic president, The Smiler, also seems creepily relevant to the post-9/11 attack on civil liberties, particularly when Spider quotes the newsfeeds as saying, 'The President is officially 'studying the constitution to protect the people from outmoded language and ideas therein.''
If it sounds like this collection gets a bit preachy, it does, and plot continuity suffers as a result. But those of us who have come to know and love Spider and his mad quest for the truth aren't likely to stop reading. As director Darren Aronofsky (_Pi,_ _Requiem for a Dream_) says in his introduction, 'Profanity + anger + revolution + cynicism + drugs + cigarettes + truth + justice - fair = Spider Jerusalem. . . . A true original.'

Summary: The latest TPB of this fantastic series features a pretty big plot point for our bowel-disrupting hero, Spider Jerusalem. This is definately NOT the book for an unsuspecting reader who is new to transmet to purchase. You'll want to start from the beginning.
That said, it's obvious from the stories in this volume that the series is coming to a final end. It has ended for all of you who bought the issues themselves, but for late-comers such as myself, you'd better start savoring the time you spend with Spider as much as possible.
The meat of this collection is the 4 part story featuring a huge storm, which thrusts Spider into a deep coma. We meet one of the Filthy Assistants father, and gear up for the last dozen or so issues of the series. Issues 43-48 are reprinted in lovely colour, a great cover, and the standard vertigo TPB fare. Transmet stops at issue 60, so you'd better pay catch up before the we hit bottom!

Summary: After taking us n the ride of our life, Warren Ellis is finishing of with a tone non can ignore.
IN the last attempt to find the truth and expose "the smiler" Spider Jerusalem is doing what he does best, recovering the truth no matter what may be the consequences.
The comic reads like a hurricane, jumping from scene to scene and bringing the chaos that rose with the election of "the smiler".
Spider Jerusalem is fighting against time, against his decaying brain and against forces that hold almost all of the cards.
Holding to the truth, his fists, his bowl disrupter and the chair leg of truth Spider is giving the fight of his life.
A marvellous ending to a brilliant work of literature and art
