Biology
Description: A college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the students with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, a complete survey of three of the five kingdoms in Creation, and ecosystems. Students will be expected to be well-prepared for class each week and to be actively engaged in the learning process. This class is a minds-on classroom where Biology students will analyze, find answers, work with science vocabulary, locate information, debate, complete labs and dissections, discuss, model concepts, write-to-learn, partner with other students, and communicate findings to each other.

Chemistry
Description: This course is designed to be a high school chemistry course that gives the student a good foundation in chemistry in order to prepare him or her for a college-level course. In order to understand this text, the student needs to have completed Algebra I and should have access to a scientific calculator. The course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, equilibrium and organic chemistry. Students who take and understand this course will be very well prepared for a tough university chemistry course. Hopefully, they will also gain an appreciation for chemistry around them in their every day lives.

General
Description: This is an Apologia course designed to be a student's first systematic introduction to the sciences. Whereas 1st semester covered the first 8 chapters of the text (including general science foundations and past life), 2nd semester covers the last 8 chapters, which are on current life (including characteristics and taxonomy of life, and various systems within the human body). 2nd semester can be considered life science, and is an introduction to biology.
Note: The 2nd semester stands alone, and can easily be taken without taking the first semester.
The text is written in a nice conversational style, and recognizes God's handiwork. Most labs in the text are done in class, either hands-on or as demos. Class time also includes lectures/discussion emphasizing main points from each chapter. Follow-up emails will be sent after each class, clarifying homework and other notes. Students are expected to complete chapter reading, lab reports, study guide questions, and chapter tests at home. These are collected and scores entered into a spreadsheet. The last day of the semester includes taking an in-class final test on chapters 9-16 and a fun extra credit competition (e.g. mouse trap car contest). Students must keep up with reading and homework in order to fully comprehend the material and to be prepared for in-class activities. Binders should be divided into four sections: notes and on-your-own questions, study guide questions, lab experiments, and tests. Students who do not have a lot of experience taking tests which require them to truly master the course material might have trouble with this course at first. However, the study skills required for this course are absolutely essential for high school and beyond.

Physics for the Liberal Arts
Description: This course is designed to be a first level high school physics course. Laura Glassel believes that physics can be fun and interesting, and that students who are not in love with math can still be amazed at the concepts in physics. She understands that not every student aspires to be a physicist and those who do are probably taking physics at a college through the PSEO program. Laura has geared this course to those who want physics on their high school transcript without the overwhelming barrage of the complicated math, and with the goal of getting students to appreciate physics around them in their daily lives (including how physics is at work in all the rides at Valley Fair)!
