Language Classes

Sign Language I

Description:This course is designed for the beginner in American Sign Language. Skills covered will be finger spelling, basic sentence structure, and vocabulary. Deaf culture, community, and history of Deafness will also be discussed.

Tutor: Carol Schultz

Length: Full Year

Level: 7th - 12th grades

Prerequisite: None

Homework: 30 minutes per day.

Sign Language II

Description: With the basics of American Sign Language in place, students will continue to progress in their abilities and techniques by further developing their vocabulary, sentence structure, and communication skills. Understanding and appreciating the deaf culture will be interwoven throughout this class.

Spanish I

Description: This is a fun, challenging, and very interactive Spanish course. While engaging in a variety of activities to promote communication in Spanish, students will learn fundamental vocabulary and grammar concepts. Students will also have exposure to other areas such as geography, history, music, and art as they pertain to the Spanish language and culture. The Realidades I textbook and practice workbook are very user friendly, comprehensive, and also offer online practice and self-tests. Everyone will be expected to speak as much Spanish as possible. In the beginning this will be limited, but as the year progresses, more and more Spanish will be spoken.

Students will put all their Spanish I skills to good use, as they work to expand their vocabulary and learn advanced grammar concepts. Through a variety of activities, students will increase their reading, writing, listening, comprehension, and speaking abilities. Students will also continue to have exposure many other areas such as geography, history, music, and art as they pertain to the Spanish language and culture. The Realidades I textbook and practice workbook are very user friendly, comprehensive, and also offer online practice and self-tests. Everyone will be expected to speak Spanish as much as possible.

Text: (To be purchased by parents) Realidades, Level I. If you are a new student to SHCC and have not used Realidades curriculum before, please use the ordering information from Spanish I. This is a highly challenging curriculum series and Prentice-Hall's curriculum covers all of what would be in 2 years of high school Spanish. If you are a returning student and have already ordered the books listed in Spanish I, then you don't need to buy a new book. Students are required to have a Spanish/English Dictionary.

Optional recommended text: 501 Spanish Verbs, ISBN: 0764124285.

The Realidades II textbook and practice workbook are very user friendly, comprehensive, and also offer online practice and self-tests. Our goal is to only speak Spanish in the classroom.
