Maribo

Maribo was the name for a very rural county in the south east of Denmark. Before the 1970 amalgamation of the traditional counties it consisted of Lolland, Falster and some smaller islands, Fejø, Femø and Askø in the bay north of Lolland. After 1970 this part of Denmark was part of Storstrøms Amt. It's a very flat part of Denmark, so flat that other Danes say this about Lollanders:

"Det var fandens til bjerg, sagde lolliken, han faldt over en kolort":
(That was a hell of a mountain said the Lollander, as he fell over a Cow Paddy)

Tom Stryhn's site -- Mostly in Danish, but worth the effort if you have ancestors from Maribo. Look for the Union Jack icon to see some of the site translated into English. Tom has an extensive database of Lolland/Falster families which he has taken from original records such as parish records, census, military records, etc.

Tourism:

The official Visit East Denmark site
Nykøbing-Falster Tourist information
Middelaldercentret-- an open air museum showing what life was probably like in the Middle Ages.
Reventlow museum in Vesterborg-- in Danish only
Størstroms museums and archives-- maps and lists of archives and museums in the former Størstroms Amt. (Danish only)
Nakskov Fjord-- information, photos, maps of the area around Nakskov. Also Danish only. If you're beginning to guess that Maribo is not the most common stop for English-speaking tourists, you're guessing correctly.
