Back to the School District Issue...
April 13, 2008
I feel a little bad about not posting a follow up to
this sooner. In my last post I wrote about being
disappointed about not hearing back from the
Assistant Director of Special Education Services for
the district. She did actually call me back the next
morning - a day later than she promised to call. She
had gotten the messages I had left and was calling me
from her meeting out of town. This meant she really
didn't have time to listen to me. She said the speech
pathologist was "devastated" to learn that her
remarks had upset us, and that Kai would be receiving
a speech evaluation.
I told her that I appreciated that the speech pathologist did not intend to be offensive in her remarks, but that I felt our feelings regarding them at the time were quite clear. I also told her that the outcome of our team meeting was quite clear that Kai would not be getting a full evaluation. I was getting frustrated talking with the director because it was quite clear that she had called me a second time when she didn't have time to really listen to what I was saying. So I told her that I wanted to schedule a meeting in person to discuss this further when she had more time. That meeting is 10:30 tomorrow morning.
In preparation for this meeting, I sent her a very detailed email spelling out all of our concerns. I am going to have a copy of that email printed out for each of us, as well as an outline of the specific issued I want to discuss. I am hoping that this will be a productive meeting and that all of us leave it feeling better about things.
