Welcome to the ZavelogueIn this entry I provide some background on the
now concluded Zavelogue (for those new visitors wondering what this blog is all
about) and invite you to visit my new India-related blog: The Curious Stall
.
Read More Fri - June 24, 2005Let the blog begin...Marion and I just returned from our 3-day visit
to DC for an orientation for Fulbright scholars heading to North Africa, the
Middle East, and South Asia. Several Fulbright alumni emphasized the importance
of keeping a journal. So I just downloaded this nifty blogging software and
thought I would get things started.

3.3 million square kilometers?

year old child in tow?
Posted at 03:10 AM Read More Thu - October 27, 2005Thu - November 24, 2005The countdown has begun...With just two days until we leave for India,
we're frantically trying to make sure we have everything we need and nothing we
don't.
Posted at 02:52 PM Read More Fri - November 25, 2005One step closerDelancey Street Movers came today and packed us
all up. Amidst all the packing and noise, Claire took a two-and-a-half hour nap.
Luc's nap was only an hour, but he was quite a trooper
nevertheless.

International Airport, but don't currently have Internet access, so am not sure
when this will be posted.
Posted at 01:23 PM Read More Mon - November 28, 2005Two legs down, one to goWe're in a first-class lounge at Frankfurt
airport. Our flight from Dulles was fine in terms of child behavior, but pretty
dismal in terms of the quality of service. I expected more out of a United
Airlines transcontinental flight, even if we were flying coach. Our seats were
small, with little leg room. The flight attendants constantly bothered us, which
is frustrating enough when you're trying to sleep, but even more so when you're
hoping your children don't wake up to the "Last call for Duty Free purchases"
warning. Despite this, Claire and Luc slept a fair amount, but constantly tossed
and turned--not good quality sleep at all. They are holding up well
nonetheless.
Posted at 01:51 AM Read More India: We have arrived9:21 a.m. local time, A-92 Defence Colony, Delhi.
Wow! We're here. Lots to report...plane rides, escalator (near) mishaps,
immigration lines, lorries, autorickshaws, our flat, water, mosquitoes, and
more
Posted at 08:01 PM Read More Sat - December 3, 2005Our first outingWe arrived early in the morning on Tuesday, 29
November, and by Saturday had already seen Delhi's major sites: the Red Fort,
Chandni Chowk, and Jama Masjid mosque.
Posted at 01:25 AM Read More Jet lag woesFor some reason neither Marion nor I anticipated
having to deal with our children waking up at midnight and expecting to be up
for the day. Nor did we foresee that they would take afternoon naps, waking them
from which would unleash floods of tears. But that's exactly what we've been
dealing with.
Posted at 01:41 AM Read More Parks in IndiaIf we were childless travelers, I doubt we'd have
noticed. But since we have two children, one of whom is able to say "I want to
go to the park" until you can't bear it anymore, we've had to brave a couple of
India's parks.
Posted at 01:50 AM Read More Bahai House of WorshipWe knocked off another of Delhi's great sites
today, the Bahai House of Worship. I don't mean any irreverence in saying we
knocked it off, but since every outing with our two underlings is a bit of a
challenge, like Hilary, when we conquer these little Everests I'm inclined to
say "we knocked the bastard off."
Posted at 02:11 AM Read More The life of Indian studentsOn Thursday I had the opportunity to sit on a
panel that interviewed twenty Indian undergraduates who were finalists in a
program that sends students from developing countries to the U.S. to complete
their degrees.
Posted at 06:37 AM Read More Wed - December 7, 2005India's National ZooWe went to the Delhi Zoo yesterday, at the
invitation of the owners of the flat we're renting. Dev, from Manali, and his
wife, Chandra, originally from New York, have two daughters, Aditi and Asha. We
had a great time. More importantly, Claire made some new friends.
Posted at 06:24 AM Read More Lodhi Gardens and back to Khan MarketToday Dev and Chandra said we had to go to Khan
market because one of the shops was getting a shipment of some strawberry juice
that the girls really love. So we combined our trip to Khan with a stop at Lodhi
Gardens, probably Delhi's most beautiful park (replete with sites of
archeological significance like many places in Delhi), for a walk, some ball
kicking, and some tumbling on the grass.
Posted at 06:46 AM Read More Defence Colony and the flatWe're pretty fortunate to be staying in a nice
neighborhood, whatever that means in Delhi, and in a pretty decently appointed
flat. Still, there are some challenges to daily life we don't face at
home.
Posted at 07:33 AM Read More Indians and WesternersIndians certainly have their fair share of
contact with westerners, so why is it that wherever we go people want to touch
our children and take their picture?
Posted at 07:49 AM Read More Thu - December 8, 2005Claire and Luc's ongoing adjustmentClaire's sleep seems to be more or less what it
was before we left. Luc on the other hand sleeps for about 4-5 hours straight,
then wakes up and sleeps for about an hour at a time the rest of the night.
After each hour he fusses some more, but we can usually get him back to sleep.
The bigger question might be how Claire and Luc are adjusting to being away from
home and in a strange place.
