Richness of Life in Calcutta
Despite its poverty, there is an undeniable
richness to life in Calcutta. The rickshaws, yellow taxis, streetcars, water
pumps, children bathing at the pumps, the cricket, of course, and many other
aspects of street life. The pictures in this entry try to convey just a bit of
what this life is like.
In most of India, life is lived on the streets.
In Calcutta, this practice seems more pronounced than anywhere we've seen.
Perhaps because of the population density, there is more action on the streets.
Throughout the day, everywhere you look, there are people using the streets to
transport goods using various means of
conveyance.
All
types of work is done on the streets as well; like cooking, of course, but also
shoe repairing, bicycle repairing, flower arrangement making, and on and
on.
Life in Calcutta also seems to revolve
around the water pumps. Claire and Luc were entranced with the activity
happening at a pump near the guesthouse one morning. A nice lady allowed Luc to
help her pump
water.
Yes, people in Calcutta are poor. But
there is a certain richness of life in Calcutta as well.
