One step closer
Delancey Street Movers came today and packed us
all up. Amidst all the packing and noise, Claire took a two-and-a-half hour nap.
Luc's nap was only an hour, but he was quite a trooper
nevertheless.
The chaos has subsided here somewhat. Now with
everything in boxes, sitting in our house waiting for the movers to come back
tomorrow and load the door-to-door storage containers, we have a much clearer
idea of what is going with us to India.
So, what is going in our six bags that we
are checking? Most of the space is being taken up by mosquito nets, chemicals to
treat the nets, repellent, diapers, and various medicines. I'm also bringing
some books for my research, two laptops, an ipod I'll use to record interviews,
and a bevy of cables and adapters to connect the laptops in a range of
circumstances. In terms of clothes, we're bringing very little. I'll have three
pairs of pants, three shirts, one pair of sandals, one jacket, and about three
pairs each of underwear and socks. Marion is bringing about the same. Our plan
is to buy clothing in India--either prefabricated or made-to-order by a tailor
when we get there. We'll sleep in our
house for the last time tonight. Tomorrow, once the movers leave, the house will
be completely bare. We'll be staying with our friends Gunther and Eliza, and
their boys Anders and Auggie. Claire is very much looking forward to spending
the night at her friend Anders' house. But tomorrow we still have to put the car
into storage, and all the boxes and items we want to get out of storage in June
when we get back. The bulk of our cargo, which is going into the door-to-door
containers, we won't see again until August when we move back into our remodeled
and expanded house. We also have to get our six bags, a stroller, a
pack-and-play, and several carry-ons around the corner to Gunther and Eliza's
house. Perhaps once that's done we can
rest.Then, Sunday morning at 5 a.m.,
our ride to the airport comes to pick us up. We realize now that planning travel
for the Sunday after Thanksgiving was not very bright. As with every other
aspect of this adventure, our approach will be to deal with whatever comes our
way--travelers, customs officials, Bengal tigers,
whatever.Just so we don't forget,
here's what we all look like "pre-departure." I'll save these pictures and post
them next to some post-India pics six months from
now.
