Flight info finalized; Delhi residence set

Just a quick post to say that we finally, well almost, have flights to New Delhi finalized. We'll be flying either from San Francisco or Oakland to Chicago, and then from Chicago direct to New Delhi on a 14.5- hour leg. The "either/or" part has to do with the initial itinerary the India Fulbright office sent us having just a 55 minute layover in Chicago following the flight from SFO. This seems a little short, so we are asking them to look into an earlier flight to Chicago. If there are no earlier flights from SFO, I've asked them to look into departures out of Oakland.

The more important news is that we have a place to stay in Delhi, at least until December 14. The place, called the Delhi Escape apartments, looks amazing. The manager, a great guy named Dev Gupta, has two small children and has asked if we need anything special to make the kids feel at home. He said he can even get us car seats, which we had figured we'd go without while in India. Sure, the rent is on the steep side, though cheaper than staying in a hotel. But we decided it would be important to have a nice place to stay in on arrival, with most of the luxuries we're used to at home, so that Claire and Luc can have an easy transition.

We'll probably head for Thiruvananthapuram (TVM) on 14 December, when we have to leave the apartment because someone else has booked it. I have a feeling the more permanent housing we find in TVM won't be quite as nice as the Delhi Escape apartment.

The final bit of news is that I had a paper accepted at the Second International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability , in Hanoi, Vietnam from January 9-12. I've put in for a travel grant from USF so that I can go from India to Vietnam for the conference. I'm hoping, if I'm able to go, that I can do some research while in Vietnam. For those readers who might be interested, I'll explain more about the connections between environmental health activism in India and Vietnam in another post over in the "Environmental Health Activism in India" category.
