  ART 180 A, : Personal Logo

Sketchbook, Reading " The Complete Metalsmith" Read chapters 1-5

The student will design a 2 inch by 2 inch personal logo or monogram, which they will then transfer to the metal. To pierce the image out of the metal, much like a stencil, they next drill and saw. Files are then used to sculpt the edges of the design in order to give the appearence of more volume in space. The student will then sand and finish the piece. The metal will be provided. These will then be mounted either s a belt buckle or as pendants.

ART 180 B: week one Cuttle Casting

Read Mc Creight's " Practicle Casting ", pages 72-74, 76, also 48-52

The complete casting process will be stripped to its basic steps using this ancient method of casting. A very simple and early form of casting, cuttle casting yields surprising detail, which can be duplicated. You will need to buy the cuttle bones (local pet stores) and the school will supply some casting bronze for a few small scale pieces. Bring any silver scrap you have to the first day of class.
