Process

Working in groups of 4-5, you will:

1)Assign roles to members of group. Each group of 4-5 students will consist of a Production Manager, a Technology Consultant, a Creative Director, and a Research Coordinator.

2)Explore the cyberbee website in the Resources section. Located near the big letter “C” click on "Copyright with Cyberbee." Scroll down and select "Copyright Web Site" and then "Info" to "Get up to speed on the basics of Copyright Law." Read through the information and then, with your group, write definitions for the following terms: copyright, fair use, public domain, attribution. Be sure to rewrite the definitions in your own words and give an example of each.

3)Next, click on the Copyright Website (see Resources). Click on “Info” and read the article entitled “Where did Copyright come from?” With your group, read this brief summary and discuss what could be considered the “facts” contained in this article as well as the words that reflect the author’s “opinion” in the article. List these facts and opinions and then write about what we should be aware of when we do research on the internet.

4)Explore “A Visit to Copyright Bay” website (see Resources). Click on “text version” and then “ Background Beach.” What does copyright protect and not protect? List these.

5) Now visit a website that explains and gives examples of plagiarism. What is the meaning of plagiarism (what are the examples they give)? Next, scroll down to “How to Recognize Unacceptable and Acceptable Paraphrases.” Read the two examples and explain why the one is plagiarism and the other is not. Finally, scroll down to “Strategies for Avoiding Plagiarism” and list the three recommended strategies.

6) Each member of your group will now answer the following questions. What copyright laws surprised you? What regulations were you already familiar with? How will you make sure your projects and reports this year do not violate copyright laws? Why is this topic important for us to consider not just from a legal standpoint but from an ethical point of view?

7) Create a PowerPoint presentation to share what you learned. Your group PowerPoint should include at least one slide on each of the above questions. Do not forget to create a slide for your Bibliography. Present to the class.
