Kill Bill Vol.2 (18) Yr - 2003 Dir - Quentin Tarantino Str - Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Michael Madsen, Darryl Hannah
I wanted to love this film, but unfortunately I couldnt. It started O.K. had some good bits and then went on...and on. I understand that Tarantino loves this genre and obviously had so much fun making the film that he didnt want it to end, but in this case he needed someone to hold in his reins.
The film starts with the wedding rehearsal that we saw the massacre at in Vol.1. This is a good beginning with great use of tension as we know what is about to happen. The dialogue between Thurman and Carradine at this point is fantastic and fleshes out a lot of back story.
Then Michael Madsen pops up and does his thing, which is boring. To be honest I found most scenes without Uma Thurman in unnecessary. All I needed to see was Uma Thurman make her way around and kill everybody. What I got instead were lengthy build ups to disappointing climaxes. Nobody quite died satisfactorily enough in the film for me. I am not usually one for violence but in this case it was all I wanted.
I found the dialogue a little forced and not as natural as it has seemed in Tarantino's previous films. Darryl Hannah in particular had trouble pulling off a long monologue about a snake.
The film had some good points, the sequence in which Thurman is buried alive is exhilarating and extremely enjoyable. The fight sequence with Thurman and Hannah is also a highlight. Unfortunately these moments were few and far between and paced between extraneous long scenes which killed any sense of rhythm.
The ending in particular was very much a damp squib. I don't think I am ruining much when I say that Thurman does indeed Kill Bill but this sequence drags on with a lot of conversation justifying both of their actions and then ending with a very short fight.
I dont feel I am judging this film too harshly. Tarantino intended the film to be enjoyable and not a beard stroking film analysts dream. So the simple conclusion is that I did not enjoy the film very much.
JAMESOMETER SCORE - 6/10
