A more "brick like" approach
 
A different way to go about making the modular caverns. Instead of 1 piece mold of large sections, these are individual pieces with interlocking circular bases.
 

   


Got the idea by playing around with pieces of dowels.
Cut small PVC to shape the clay base.
Wet hobby knife and work clay with short sweeping motions.
The curves in the bases match to shat they can "nest" within each other.
You can position them in many arrangements.

Here's another bottom view to show how you can arrange them in many ways.
I've glued them together and to a base of 1.5" floor tiles.
Just testing their compatibility with my single-piece cavern walls.
