How-to Cavern Walls

Here are some of the steps I used to make my modular cavern wall sections. The construction going on here is for a corner piece. (Sorry - Some photos are blurry).

Make 1/4" high Frame, Put Clay in frame, Press in flat stones
Judge height and placement, start at edge of ajoining piece.
Start with simple, crude clay bits, we will work it while wet later.
Added some vine-like structures (clay rolled up).
I wanted gas vents or spouts, so I made them with a pencil.
Dip curved hobby knife in water. With this clay, only a little water is needed
See the middle? scrape&work the wet clay with back of knife.
Large sections have course patern, "vines" were worked by dry scrapings.
I added more "roots" working their way into rock floor and walls.
Unpainted - just testing various layouts of the new piece with some of my others
Some more playing and testing to get some ideas.
A shot of the corner along with some of my other modular sections.
I then made a 1-piece RTV mold of the corner, similar to these.
This shows some of the roots/vines working their way into the structure.
Pict doesn't really show vibrance of colors. Going for a fantasy look here.
