Welcome to the World of Drumming!

Congratulations on making the decision to learn the drums! Many people wish they could play this wonderful instrument, but few decide to take the first step. You just have!!

Learning to play well will need time to develop your skills and this will take patience, persistence and practice. It really is worth it and you will get a lot of enjoyment for your efforts.

Let me tell you how I learned to play. As a child there was no room in my house for a drum kit and no money for lessons, so I started by tapping out beats on some tins. I was a late starter getting my first kit at 18 years old. I played around on the kit, learning bits and pieces until, at the age of twenty-one, I decided (with the encouragement of others) that I would take music seriously and make it my profession. I soon realised that I had a lot of hard work to do to accomplish the standard needed. I started on what turned out to be a 3-year study, practicing around 5 hours a day. I tried to learn about all different styles of music, listened to lots of different players, taught myself to read music notation and discovered the rudiments of percussion. This study still continues today, nearly 30 years later.

You will find your own degree of learning and decide what level you want to learn to play and I promise you will discover a lot about yourself on the journey.

Getting started is the hardest part of any challenge; so I hope that this book will help you with the initial stage and you go on to learn a lot about drumming (and yourself) in the process.

Drums have been around for about 30,000 years so you are joining a very old, noble tradition. Now it is your turn to contribute to that history - make your mark and have fun!
