The Various John KIMBROUGHs of North Carolina
Last revised: 4 May 1998
There seems to be an endless supply of John KIMBROUGHs in North Carolina during the 1700s. Below are all I've identified, so far. If anyone knows of any others or has information they would like to contribute here, please write. Sarah Sharpless
- 1768: Tryon Co., NC, formed from Mecklenburg Co. (Tryon Co. was abolished in 1779).
- From Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. (prsjr@aol.com), 10 November 1996 (from York Co., SC, Gen Web page): "The Old TRYON County, of North Carolina Created in 1768 and was dissolved in 1779. The boundaries consisted of (present-day) part of Burk, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, part of McDowell Polk, Rutherford, all of North Carolina. Also consisted of (present-day) Cherokee, Spartanburg, and small parts of Chester, Greenville, Laurens, and York Counties all of South Carolina."

John Kimbrough, son of Marmaduke
This John may have been born between 1730 and 1745, based on a surmised birth date for his father Marmaduke and deed records showing when Marmaduke was married to his first wife, Anne.
John Kimbrough, son of Buckley
This John may have been born c. 1724 or later. Buckley died 1742 / 1743 and John was a minor at the time of his death. He is said to be the same John who moved to Darlington Co., SC, before the Revolutionary War and died there c. 1796. According to authors, he only had one child -- a daughter, Elizabeth, however, he may have had a son, Buckley.
John Kimbrough, son of Nathaniel
Nathaniel Kimbrough died in 1781, Wake Co., NC, and was a son of Buckley Kimbrough. John was supposedly born in 1765; he was a minor when his father's will was written in 1781. He reportedly married Lydia Jones in 1800 (although that seems late if the 1765 birth date is correct -- unless she was a second wife) and reportedly died in 1822, Tennessee.
John Kimbrough, son of Bradley
This John was reportedly born c. 1747. Bradley Kimbrough moved from Virginia to Orange Co., NC, in the 1760s. Bradley died c. 1795, Rowan Co., NC.
John Kimbrough, son of Thomas
John, son of Thomas, died c. 1823, Caswell Co., NC. Estimates of his birth date range from c. 1730 to c. 1747. He appears to have (thankfully) remained settled in Caswell County.
John Kimbrough, son of William
William was granted land in Granville Co. in 1760 (the land appears to have fallen in Bute Co. when that county was created) and moved to Wilkes Co., GA, in 1773. William died in Greene Co., GA, in 1803. I don't have a father for this William. William's birth date is estimated c. 1735, and his son, John, c. 1755. John died in 1808, Greene Co., GA.
William is currently indexed under Mystery KIMBROUGHs.
Lt. John Kimbrough of Anson Co., NC, and Wilkes Co., GA.
I grew up hearing that I was descended from Lt. John Kimbrough who married Ann LeGrand(e). This John reportedly was born 1745, Anson Co., NC, died 1799, Wilkes Co., GA, and served in the Revolutionary War under Gen. Elijah Clarke. Interestingly, I discovered a DAR report (Graves of Soldiers of the American Revolution,62nd Report of the National Society of the DAR, 86th Congress, Second Session, Senate Document 100, 1958-1959) that stated that this John Kimbrough died 1784-86 and is buried in Anson Co., NC. Based solely on geography, this John might be connected with the family of John, son of Marmaduke, or John, son of Buckley.
John Kimbrough of Edgecombe Co., NC ?
On 1 March 1742 / 43, John KIMBROUGH and William ALSTON witnessed a deed from Solomon ALSTON of Granville Co., NC to Nicholas BYNUM of Halifax Co., NC for 200 acres of land in Edgecombe Co., NC. Could this be Buckley's son? John KIMBROUGH, son of Buckley was still a minor in 1744, when Marmaduke Kimbrough was named his guardian. I don't know at what age people could witness legal documents.
