Poetry File

BACKGROUND: Expressing yourself is a vital part of life. Poetry is one way to express yourself in writing without all the pressure of worrying about having exactly correct punctuation and grammar. Poetry gives us the freedom to “bend the rules.”

TASK: Your task is to create a poetry file.

AUDIENCE: The audience for your poetry file is your classmates, your teacher, yourself (in the future), and those you share it with.

PURPOSE: This task has several purposes.

  1. It exposes you to a variety of poetry.
  2. It gives you the chance to be creative and original in the poems you choose and in the way you choose to illustrate your poetry.
  3. It allows you the chance to be a poet.

REQUIREMENTS: Your file must have the following elements:
  1. Table of Contents
  2. Seven Poems
    1. At least one poem must be an original, created by you.
    2. At least one, but not more than two, must be the lyrics of a song.
    3. At least one poem must be serious.
    4. At least one poem must be funny.
    5. At least one poem must be narrative (tell a story).
    6. At least one poem must use figurative language.
    7. No poem may have any inappropriate language, even if it is edited out.
    8. Each poem must be illustrated.
    9. For each poem, choose one word that describes what the poem means to you. Then write a paragraph which explains why you chose that word.
  3. Definition of Poetry
    1. Based on your experience
    2. May be poetry, prose, illustrations, or other preapproved method
  4. List of Sources
