In this activity you will hone your observing skills by studying the melting behavior of different solids. Each solid will be observed first in a candle flame, and then in a Bunsen burner flame. You will be graded on the quality of your observations (can you communicate what you see?), the organization of the observations, and the thoughtfulness of your answers to the focus questions.
FOCUS QUESTIONS:
1. What is the rank order of these six solids, from lowest to highest melting temperature? Upon what evidence do you base this order?
PROCEDURE:
1. Using a pair of crucible tongs, hold each of the following materials in a candle flame. Record your observations of their melting behavior.

3. Now set up the adjusted Bunsen burner on a ringstand at an angle, as shown in the diagram. This will prevent melted material from clogging the barrel. Use a small aluminium drip pan below the flame.
4. Repeat step #1 using the Bunsen burner flame. Make sure to hold the objects in the outer blue cone, just above the inner blue cone. Record your observations.
