Arrival in Hanoi (Pretentious Poetry 1)

Friends of ours, Brian and Pam, have just set down in Hanoi and though we haven't caught up with them yet I can imagine what they are going through right now. They've never been here before and I'm sure it will take a while to adjust. I remember how I felt the first time I experienced Hanoi. In fact I wrote a poem. Here it is for your viewing, uh, pleasure.

Hanoi street corner

A street corner like no other
I squat on a chair beside my Lover
We watch an endless stream of hustle
Bikes and cars and busses tussle
We sip on beer served on a street
A glass of refuge from the heat
People pass with things to sell
What’s in this batter I can't tell
We sit for hours and watch the masses
Time flows past us like molasses
There’s a lot of traffic but no real hurry
The people are busy but do not worry
We sip the last of this curious blend
Our time on the corner has come to an end.
