The Day The Birds Died

In one of the student books we use at Language Link, there is a section called "The Day The Birds Died".

I have to admit to being fascinated by this title because it is so rare to see wild birds in Hanoi. Caged birds in lovely bamboo cages are reasonably common and seem to be fairly prestigious. Free birds are just not seen, though.

That is, until we went to HCMC. We actually saw pigeons being fed in a park! They were large and healthy and it was strange to see something like that and actually think how unusual it was.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that many years of war have seen birds first used as food during times of famine; and then being wiped out by chemicals and bombs. Perhaps one day, birds will make their home among the trees of Hanoi. We hope so.
