Vietnamese Etiquette Lesson #1

You have to be careful when you gesture for someone to come towards you in Vietnam. The western habit of curling a finger or a hand upright and waving the person towards you is considered really rude.

Instead, if people feel they must gesture someone towards them, then the hand is curled upside down for the same action. People tend to make it a much smaller action, as well. No involvement of the arm, and the hand is often curled in fairly tight - I often think people feel vaguely embarrassed at resorting to this action, but it is much better than the hand-up full-on western way.
