The Seventeen Year Cicada

2004 is an emergence year for the seventeen year cicada (Magicicada septendecim). The cicadas are numerous here around Ann Arbor, Michigan now.

2004 is an emergence year! May 29, 2004
Larvae emerge from holes in the ground
This one is still pumping up its wings
Now it is more pigmented
In the woods the cicadas are numerous
I watched a cedar waxwing eat one whole!
The exuvia (empty cases) are nearby
cicada exuviae
Left by a bird predator?
Some do not survive emergence
Rest after a long wait.
The final product of 17 years!
