AN EARTH SCIENCE PATHFINDER

CONCLUSION

So, OK, do you have some rocks in your head now? I mean, did this pathfinder give you some ideas about the Earth, about fossils, about time and evolution and the parade of creatures that have lived on Earth before us? I hope you have had fun and been intrigued by the resources you have explored here. And I hope you will take this information a step furhter and use it to share your knowledge with others. Some ideas for that are science fair projects, Scout projects, stories you could write, art you could create, tie-ins to other sciences like Chemistry, Biology and Anatomy. And remember, you can come back any time and dig a little deeper -- there is always more to learn about Planet Earth!

Some Extension Ideas

      • Explore careers in Earth Sciences

      • Take a field trip if possible to fossil collecting sites or museums

      • Apply your new experiences to 4H and Scout activities and badges

      • Invite an Earth Scientist to visit your school

      • Explore creatures known as living fossils like the coelecanth

      • Compare and contrast animals that are related to fossil creatures like elephants and mastodons/mammoths, the giant squid and cephalopods, great white shark and megalodon

      • Contact kids in schools at famous fossil sites like Calvert Cliffs in Maryland or the Falls of the Ohio in Indiana -- ask them about their fossil collecting experiences

      • Create pictures of ancient Indiana like the environment of the Inland Sea or the Ice Age landscape

      • Create a presentation on fossils for younger children
