Tiger

Kicking the tires on tiger

Took the plunge and gave Tiger a look on my old tiBook. Decided on a fresh install which took about 42 minutes from sliding the disk in to logging into a shell on the new account.

Dashboard is pretty cool, my original thought was that this was going to be total eye candy, but after giving it a try I must confess I can see a lot of use for this. The translator, traffic report widget, doppler map , and weather report were widgets that I surely would peak at fairly often.

I was wondering how the apps I rely on the most (Quicksilver and Desktop Manager ) would be under Tiger given the newness of the release. Quicksilver seems to be just fine. DM is there for the most part, but some of the hot keys seem to get ignored. I'm sure this will be fixed in not too much time. Beyond this, LaTeX Vim , Python, and R all installed and ran just fine.

Safari seems a bit more stable than what I was getting under 10.3.9 - too many beachballs were seen but the move to Tiger seems to have rectified this. Overall things seem a bit more snappy than Panther on this machine. I'm going to wait for a few point releases before putting Tiger on the desktops and main laptop.
