I built this onto the wall of the old house. The back and sliding door are 1/4” birch plywood. The rest is just pine, although the shelves on the right half are poplar. I wanted something different for the finish. Kim didn’t want something cool like orange or purple, so we went with blue. I used some crappy water–based stain, which I hated. The overlaps were very obvious on the big birch sheets, even though I used some pre–stain primer stuff that was supposed to equalize the wood.
This thing was a bitch to build because I had to bring each piece in from the garage to be test fit, and it was the middle of Winter, so the garage was a sloppy mess and I had to take my shoes off every time I came in. Then if I spent too much time inside test assembling the pieces or whatever, I’d start sweating because of the insulated coveralls required in the garage. Bleah. I’ll never do that again.
I know I have more pictures of this entire thing, but I can’t find them now. This picture was taken after it was all done. The CDs and VHSs are in place, but we still had DVDs and books to go. Squiggy was intrigued.
