Oramyani have many forms of non-verbal communication.
- Throwing back the head means"no." It may be as subtle as raising the upper lip. (Which is a very dismissive response. Sort of a sneer that indicated the question is barely worth responding to.)
- Nodding the head means "yes."
- Shaking the head from side-to-side means "I don't understand."
- Turning both palms up, with eyes downcast, is an apologetic or submisive act.
- Holding the open palm parallel to the floor and then sweeping it towards you means "come here."
- Forming the index finger and middle finger into a 'V' and pointing means watch over there; pointing at yourself means watch me.
- Items are passed with the left hand. This is a show of trust because this is the shield hand and thus you are, at least symbolically, lowering your guard. Items are passed to social superiors with both hands as a show of respect, as you can hold no shield or weapon. This custom is not fully understood anymore, but it is very rude to offer something with the right hand, as it means you do not trust the receiver.
