"Brokeback Mountain" Review

The Professor gives it an A+.

IMDB.com plot outline: Based on the E. Annie Proulx story about a forbidden and secretive relationship between two cowboys and their lives over the years.

Oh. My. God.

I usually don't care that much for movies that are about the here-and-now, so the fact that this one has impressed me as much as it has says a great deal in its favor without going into further detail. But of course, I will anyway.

The director, writers, cast, and crew have combined to give a microscopic, detailed view of the culture I grew up in. The really ugly side of it, that is. The incredible beauty of the land, and the intolerant, narrow-minded, and occasionally vicious inhabitants thereof. The inability to speak of emotions--in any context, let alone a forbidden one. How difficult it is to have a caring relationship when talking about caring at all is forbidden. How much more difficult it is to have such a relationship when the relationship itself is forbidden. How all that is hidden and repressed can break out in unexpected and tragic ways.

If you have any illusions about cowboys, farmers, ranch hands, and small town life in the West, you will find this film disturbing. I had no such illusions, and I found it very disturbing. I was taught, as the protagonists were taught, to never speak of what lies below the surface. I've spent the past 27 years unlearning that lesson.

How far do I have yet to go?

Kudos (and Oscars?) to Mr. Ang Lee and all involved with this beautiful film.
