"Pride & Prejudice" Review

The Professor gives it an A-.

IMDB.com plot summary: Based on Jane Austen's beloved novel, the classic tale of love and values unfolds in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. The five Bennet sisters - including strong-willed Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and young Lydia (Jena Malone) - have all been raised by their mother (Brenda Blethyn) with one purpose in life: finding a husband. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), the battle of the sexes is joined.

A brief review for this one:

What I liked:
* Cinematography; it really looked like a glimpse into the past.
* Visual storytelling: The "shocking lack of propriety" of the Bennet clan was shown so that you cringed along with Elizabeth, without having to import a lot of verbiage from the novel. In some adaptations (the 1940's vintage verson comes to mind) the Bennets seem merely charming eccentrics and what was all the fuss about? Here, the social unacceptability shows clearly.
* Writing: Of course the novel was cut heavily; how not? but Austen's words come through with little change -- far less than in Lord of the Rings.

What I didn't like:
* Yeah, I agree with Lady Crumpet: even though it visually pegs the Bennets as rustics, I could have lived without the "hog balls" shot.
