A Few Thumbnail Reviews

Fantastic Four, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Batman Begins, Brothers Grimm, Sky High

I haven't stopped going to movies; I just haven't had time, right afterwards, to write up a full review. Here are some quick one or two sentence impressions:
  • Fantastic Four: B. I liked it more than many reviewers seemed to, but at the end of the day, it was Yet Another Comic Book Flick.
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: A-. It is much more faithful to the original novel than the saccharine 1970's version; I just never cared for the original novel -- too preachy.
  • Tim Burton's Corpse Bride: B. It's the patented Tim Burton mix of sweetness and the macabre. If you're a big Tim Burton fan, it'll work for you; if not, there's some cool animation to watch, in spots. (just because stop-motion is hard, doesn't mean it's all great. Sorry, Mr. Burton.)
  • Batman Begins: A. A great character story, really good acting, and not too much bullpucky in the science. The horror film style of the panic hallucinations was a superb touch.
  • Brothers Grimm: B-. I wanted to like this; I tried to like this, but someone should have been shot for letting Terry Gilliam direct this. The story would not have been too bad -- if it hadn't been directed like a Monty Python epsode.
  • Sky High: A+. Pure maternal predjudice; my older son is one of the extras. (In the final dance scene: the dude in the tailcoat and gray tuxedo vest. Screen lower right.) The rest of the movie wasn't bad, either. :)
