Hike Yesterday
The Santa Monicas are gorgeous
now...
One of the suggestions from my couples recovery
group literature was for us to get out into a natural setting. As a result, my
husband accompanied me hiking yesterday for the first time in... possibly 26
years.
Since I knew he hadn't done this
in a while, I suggested the Topanga State Park Nature Trail, short and not too
challenging; also, it's an upslope trail unlikely to be a quagmire after
Friday's rains.
He was huffing and
puffing a bit, and concerned that we had gotten lost (a bit irritating since
I've been hiking that area for 10 years), but still he seemed to do
OK.
And it's GREEN! There's water in a
pond that's been dry for 2 years. There's a trickle of water in every tiny
crevice. The clay soil is saturated, so the water will dribble out and the
creeks will have water in them, some all year! The waterfalls, recently so
disappointing, should be spectacular this
year.
I want to get over to La Jolla
Valley the next dry weekend. There actually should be significant water in the
falls -- something I haven't seen for 2
years.
In related news, I'm down to 169
pounds -- I haven't weighed so little since my knee injury in 2001.
