Akihiko Matsumoto
Akihiko Matsumoto (b. Tokyo, Japan, 1981)
Akihiko Matsumoto (松本昭彦) is a Japanese composer,sound artist, guitarist, web designer, web programmer.
Akihiko holds bachelor's degree of music at the school of the arts, Tamagawa University(玉川大学). Akihiko is currently a technical assistant of music theory and computer music at tamagawa university.

Biography
Akihiko grew up in Tokyo. His father, Shigeo is a graphic designer who designed official poster for Moscow Olympics. Akihiko learned many, such as design, aesthetics, art, philosophy and electric guitar from his father. Shigeo's father was a electronics engineering professor at Tokyo University(東京大学) .
Japanese Ankoku-butoh-dancer Yukio Waguri who is one of the most important Tatsumi Hijikata's(土方巽) student and a novelist Mikio Noishiki are Akihiko's relatives. This environment affected the opportunity to consider about art and science.
In Tamagawa University, Akihiko studied tonal harmony, computer music, programming, and composition under Dr. Akira Takaoka. The great portion of present musical philosophy is the influence from him.
After graduate, Akihiko studied composition and computer music with Johnathan F. Lee (adjunct assistant professor of former Columbia University) and traditional music theory with Cathy Cox.
From 2008, Akihiko works as technical assistant at tamagawa univerisity.
Recentry Akihiko's interests is shifting from theoritical computer music into music cognition. Akihiko is taking part in a society for the study of algorithmic music. They are studying relation ship between music and human brain under a composer Kiyoshi Furukawa at Rikagaku Kenkyusho(理化学研究所).
In 2010, Akihiko will start educational project under a composer Keiichiro Shibuya (aka. ATAK) and a sound artist evala.
Musical influence
Since Akihiko studied with Akira Takaoka in 2004, Akihiko was influenced from Iannis Xenakis and David Cope in the approach to music. Mathematical and probability approach are from Xenakis, and from Cope in terms of modeling of musical style.
Akihiko has received influence also in autechre in the meaning that the field of popular music also introduced algorithmic composition, their original complex rhythm and abstruct harmony.
Akihiko is under influence on Renaissance style polyphony, post tonal harmony and video art after studied and worked with Cathy Cox.
Since Akihiko met evala in 2009, Akihiko started fiield-recording for getting raw material in composition.

Methods for Composition
Akihiko usually uses Openmusic and max/msp for algorythmic composition and uses RTcmix for generating sound.
Usually Akihiko's compositional style is called "meta composition". Because Akihiko sets the rules of genarating musical material and structure before actual composition. It's the result of influence from meta compositional theory like Schenkerian Analysis.
But Akihiko's compositional technic and programming methods depends on aesthetics in each work. Example, "Violix"(2005) is collaboration of a computer generation and a human composition.
Other piece, "Tran"(2007) is based on PitchClass Set Theory and chaos theory.
In "Matrix"(2004) and "A/N"(2007)Akihiko used 12tone serial technic, "Gran" is for acoustic piano based on 20th century-French -composer's spectral technic, strange atractor and Set Theory. "96D" is a realtime computer generated piece influenced by pan diatonicism and Xenakis' stochastic music.
From 2009 Akihiko started to use moving image with jitter and proce55ing for interactive piece "Antiphon"(2009)"Minimailist Style"(2009).
