Physicists in Denmark have used light as a medium with which to transfer information, by a method called quantum entanglement. The advance in this particular instance is that they were able to transport the information over half a meter (where previously it was only over distances smaller than a millimeter), and they were able to transfer information of an object containing billions of atoms, rather than just a single atom. I wish the description went into details a little more, though.
