Sahorre (the village at the bottom of the hill) has a boulangerie, a renowned charcuterie (people come from afar for the sausages and pate), a small general store, a cave (wine cellar), a tabac-presse and a Post Office. The nearest supermarket is Ecomarche in Vernet-les-Bains (when you get to Sahorre, turn right over the bridge and follow the signs. When you get to Vernet, go over the bridge and turn left, and you will come to the supermarket at the edge of the town). The Ecomarche is open on Sunday mornings. Prades has two large supermarkets; Super-U is on the main Perpignan-Andorra road, and Intermarche is signposted as you approach the town. On Tuesday mornings Prades has a busy and popular market, and on Saturdays there is a smaller market for local produce. The nearest chemist is in Vernet (over the bridge and turn right, and you will see a green cross on your left). MARKETS Prades: Tues am is the big, popular market. RESTAURANTS There is a café in Escaro (turn left when you leave Clos des Manes), and a restaurant in Fuilla. There are numerous restaurants and cafes in Vernet-les-Bains and Villefranche-de-Conflent, and also around the main square in Prades. There is a Michelin star restaurant at Hotel Chateau Reill in Molitg-les-Bains. Have a look at the restaurant book for other guests' comments, and please add your own. SPORTS FACILITIES AND LOCAL ACTIVITIES There are tennis courts in Escaro, Fuilla and Vernet, and Vernet also has a large open-air swimming-pool and an equestrian centre. There is also a pool in Prades, and a swimming lake at Vinca. There are several local GR walks, and guided walks can be arranged. There are spa facilities at Vernet and Molitg, and fantastic open-air hot springs at St Thomas-les-Bains. It is impossible to list all available outdoor activities, but they include: rock climbing, orientation courses, adventure courses, golf, potholing, jeep excursions (particularly up Canigou), rally driving, canyoning, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, sailing, fishing, gliding. There is an animal park at Les Angles with native Pyrenean species, a large African Nature Reserve at Sigean, and a small 'zoo' at Casteil. Please ask us for more details, or go to the Tourist Office in Prades, which has very helpful English-speaking staff. WATER BABIES Follow the path past the hammocks down to the river, and there are some small rock pools. For something large enough to swim in, head down to Sahorre, turn right and go over the bridge, and take the road on the right to Py & Mantet. After about five minutes you will see a picnic area on your right the river there is beautiful for swimming. There is a swimming lake at Vinca, with big sandy beaches. You will see it on your right as you head towards Perpignan. There is an open air swimming pool complex at Vernet, with a large pool, children's pool and baby paddling pool. It is open in July and August. At the coast: For wide, sandy beaches there are the popular resort beaches of Argeles and St Cyprien, and anywhere north of Perpignan. Head to Collioure or anywhere south of there for small rocky coves and fishing villages. |
