The best thing to do is go to the outdoor hot springs at St Tomas les Bains (25 minutes away take the road to Andorra, and it is on the left). The worse the weather, the more fun it is! Fantastically relaxing, good for your skin, set right in the mountains, and with a baby pool. There is a renowned museum of modern art in Ceret (with works by Picasso, Braque, Chagall and Matisse amongst others). The museum of pre-history at Tautavel is interesting, based around the discovery there of Europe's oldest human skull (450,000 years old!) The caves at Villefranche are stunning and only 10 minutes away. There is a good aquarium at Banyuls, which is also an oceanographic research centre, and the surrounding marine area is a natural reserve. HARVESTS Clos des Manes is full of things to eat please help yourself! In spring, look out for highly-prized moreille mushrooms (bumper crops often found amongst the oak trees between the hammocks and the river). In early summer, it's hard to miss the cherries. The wild strawberries are harder to spot, but no less plentiful; they are tiny and grow close to the ground all over the woodland delicious. Redcurrant bushes are in the top field on the first terrace. As summer progresses, look for the plum
trees in the orchard, and as autumn arrives there are pears and
apples. In the woodland you will find blackberries and chestnuts,
and hazelnuts from the tree opposite your terrace. |
