Nokia 9k Contacts to vCard format converter
The Nokia 9110 Communicator, Mac OS X 10.2, vCards, Address Book, iCal, iSync, Bluetooth and the Sony Ericsson T68i

With the introduction of iSync on Mac OS X 10.2 (a.k.a. Jaguar) I finally retired my Nokia 9110 Communicator which I used to use to organise my life, and switched to the Sony Ericsson T68i to be a Bluetooth extension of my iBook.  Nokia seem to have abandoned Mac support and I'm not going to keep using OS9 and a USB to Serial converter just so I can connect my telephone to my Mac.  But how to get five years worth of contacts into my Mac OS X Address Book?  Address Book can import .vcf (vCard format) files, but how do I get vCard files from my Nokia 9110?  Well, I thought someone else must have already handled this problem, but a search on the web did not yield any success.  So I looked at both file formats [the Nokia 9110 contacts export file and the vCard file (.vcf)] and proceeded to write a Unix shell script that would run on my Mac (in FreeBSD Unix) which would convert my Nokia 9k contacts into vCards.  If you have a Nokia 9000 or 9110 Communicator and would like to get your contacts converted into vCards (Mac or otherwise) then please mail me at simon dot toon at macmail dot com and if you want to try the script yourself you can download it here, but make sure you mail me to let me know how you got on and if you found it useful, because that is my only reward for sharing my script with you. The script is now at version 2 and automatically converts the text file to Unix line breaks if needed.

Internet Connect freeze - Fix instructions

With Mac OS X up to and including 10.1.3 there is a problem for dial-up modem users, whereby the computer freezes when trying to connect to the internet.  This problem gets worse the more times you put your computer to sleep since the last reboot.
This patch has been provided unnofficially by Apple.

Update: 30/April/2002
Mac OS X Version 10.1.4 includes the fixed AppleSCCSerial.kext version 1.2.2, so this patch should NOT be installed if you have already updated to 10.1.4. If you have 10.1.3 or lower you can install this patch, but I would recommend that you forget this patch and update to 10.1.4 instead.
