Although
the title neurosurgeon conjures up images of life-threatening
injuries and complex brain operations, reality dictates that most
neurosurgeons are also trained spinal surgeons and treat many
patients with back pain and other common spinal problems
Back pain with or without sciatica is one of the commonest reasons
patients seek help from a doctor, only a small proportion of
patients will need to be referred to a neurosurgeon, and an even
smaller number offered an operation
Remember, if you have been referred by your GP then it doesn't
necessarily mean that you need an operation, there are many ways of
treating spinal problems other than surgery.
The pages in this section explain some of the symptoms associated
with various types of common spinal problems, together with the
likely sequence of investigations and treatment
The operations for spinal problems are covered in the Spinal
Operations section
