SURGERY FOR PITUITARY TUMOURS

The type of operation will be decided upon multiple factors

Factors that affect the nature of recomended surgery include:
The size of the tumour
The aims of the operation ( total vs partial tumour removal vs biopsy only)
The anatomy of the tumour and the bone at the base of the skull ( seen on brain scans)
The consistency of the tumor ( usually discovered at the time of the operation)
Previous surgery to the pituitary gland
Previous pituitary radiotherapy

The three main types of surgery are the endoscopic transsphenoidal route (using a telescope vis the nose), transsphenoidal route to the pituitary gland ( via the nose), or the craniotomy route ( via an opening in the skull
