General Performing Arts Information Δ
St.
James Academy is proud to present an exciting new framework
for the Performing Arts (Band, Chorus, and Drama) in our
Middle School. Each student will take drama for half of the
year with Ms. Randi Bradley, and general music for the
other half with Mrs. Smalkin. In addition, each student
elect either Chorus with Ms. Bradley, or Band with Mrs.
Smalkin for the entire year!
Mrs. Smalkin’s middle school music class students will
continue to use the wide variety of instruments found in
the Instrumental Music Room. As an International
Baccalaureate candidate school, each year there will be
more interaction with other subject areas. For example,
Sixth Grade Social Studies covers the origins of culture
with Mr. Maddix. Sixth Grade Music will explore the origins
of music concentrating on the same cultures stressed in
Social Studies.
Ms. Bradley’s has developed a sequence of drama classes
that involve Sixth Grade observing and writing every day
dialogue, Seventh Grade transforming books to theatre and
then to film, and Eighth Grade writing, directing, and
acting monologues. The subject matter of drama exercises
will align with academic subject areas when possible. For
example, Eighth Grade students may write, direct, and
perform monologues based on biographies of Holocaust
victims
SJA Middle School Band Δ
Families
of students electing an annual commitment to Band with Mrs.
Smalkin will have the additional cost of
renting or
purchasing an instrument, and, if necessary, a
microphone for online submission of homework via
SmartMusic (see attached information). To help offset
these costs St. James provides an annual onetime $30
reimbursement for all band students, in addition to
paying for the $30 subscription to SmartMusic.
