program note:
This piece was written for violoncello and a live computer electronic system which includes a Macintosh computer running Max/MSP, and was realized at Ircam. The French title, “Blue Strife” in English, originates from a Chinese character which means silence and which is composed with two Chinese characters meaning blue and strife. The composer caught this poetic metaphor in a narrow sense, as the silence of physical matter. Invisible movement, transformation, modulation, or the friction of energy behind silence, are important motives of this music.
____In various aspects of the composition, the OpenMusic software was utilized to design and process complex musical materials of the score. Some of the electroacoustic sounds in this piece were created in advance using Max/MSP and AudioSculpt, then edited in Pro Tools. In this process the composer tried to realize a new stage of the instrumental synthesis of Gérard Grisey. These pre-processed sounds are played back simultaneously synchronized with the performance, along with some real-time signal processed sounds of the instrument.
