Mini quilt
This photo was taken in September of 1995. The ruler gives you an idea of the size. The stars are cut from a star-print fabric, and the squares from a checkerboard. This is technically known as 'cheating'.
Mini quilt 2 Photo taken the same day as the first quilt. I hadn't put the binding on it yet- the white line on the edge is batting. This was another example of 'cheating'. I had three scraps left over from mom making a small quilt using fabric pre-printed with squares made to look like pieced quiltwork. I cut the scraps and assembled them offset from the original print, thus creating a more interesting design.
mini quilt 3 I took the rest of the pics November 14, 2003, but they were probably all made around 1995. This is made from a scrap of fabric pre-printed to look as if it's patchwork, then I put a border around it and heavily quilted around all the little paisleys. I always loved paisley. One of my aunts calls them 'enzymes'. It reminded me of a flying carpet when it was done, so I put gold tassels on the end. It's about 22 inches on the longest side.
Mini quilt 4 This quilt was made by cutting apart a knit fabric printed with an assortment of floral paisleys and matching 8 identical diamond-shaped motifs for each kaleidoscopic square, then setting them using the border print to fill in. This is not recommended for anyone who isn't absurdly obsessive- the knit stretched every which way & with such tiny pieces a 16th of an inch error meant ripping out and redoing.
It's about 18 inches long on the widest side.
min-quilt 5 Some days I'd just get the urge to sew scraps together at random. Quite often they wind up pillowcases for pussycats or sewing machine covers or the like, but this exercise in Zen-sewing resulted in something that was visually pleasing to me. I think of it as an 'I-Ching' quilt.
As you can see from the ruler, it's 12 inches square.
Mini-quilt 6 This photo shows the detail of the second quilt a bit better. The solid-color borders are reminscent of the Amish style of quilting, but that's about all that falls into any particular category. It looks very cheerful on a doll's bed.
