20 Best Kept MacOS Secrets

By Sheldon King

September 2000

A collection of the best MacOS tricks and tips. If you can get through this list without gasping, yelping out loud or at least learning something, I should be very surprised. If you have any great MacOS Secrets, then I'm always happy to hear them!

# 1
Open Enclosing Folder
You can open the folder that encloses the one whose contents you are currently viewing by pressing Apple+Up
plus: Also works in hierarchical dialog boxes
# 2
Quick Internet Search
Go directly to Sherlock's "Search The Internet" panel by pressing Apple+H
tip: Especially useful as a shortcut if network volumes are connected
# 3
Index and Search One Folder
Drag a folder into the Sherlock "Find" pane, and it can then be searched on it's own or in combination with other folders and volumes
# 4
Multiple, Simultaneous Sherlock Searches
Open multiple Sherlock windows [Apple+N or File -> New] before starting the first search. Sherlock won't allow you to create a new search window whilst a search is running, but it will allow you to fill in and start searches if a window is already open for them
# 5
Application Menu Versatility
You may already know that you can "tear off" the Application Menu [or Finder Menu], but did you also know that you can display it in a row at the bottom, side, top of your screen?

plus: The Application Menu is also entirely AppleScriptable!
plus: You can drag documents onto applications in the panel, to open them into the application!

In The Finder to get Mac Help:

Enter: Application Menu, then choose "Switching between open programs"

# 6
Window Edges Work
You can drag a window by its grey bevelled edge as well as by the "gripper" on the top bar ...
tip: Hold the Apple key down whilst dragging a window to keep its place in the stacking order
# 7
Icon Proxies
The miniature folder icons that appear in the top part of a Finder window are not just for decoration - they're "Icon Proxies". You can copy to a folder by dropping items onto them, you can move the folder by dragging and dropping the Icon Proxy to another location, or you can delete a folder by dragging it's Icon Proxy to the Trash.
# 8 Easy Installation of Control Strip Modules
You can install a Control Strip Module [CSM] by simply dragging it to the Control Strip.
plus: Remove a CSM by holding the Option key and dragging it out of the strip and into the Trash.
# 9 Revolving Desktop Pictures
You can set your Appearance Control Panel's Desktop Pictures feature to change the Desktop Picture every time you restart. Create a folder and place your images into it, then drag it to the pattern/picture example display under the Desktop tab. [Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> Appearance -> Desktop]. Click the "Set Desktop" Button, and the panel will randomly choose the first image. You'll get a new random one each time you restart. You can add images to the folder whenever you like, and they'll be available to the panel instantly.
plus: This works for multiple-monitor set-ups too. You can drag the same folder, or a different one, to the example display for he other monitor[s]!
#10 Close 'Em All
Close all open windows in the Finder by pressing Apple+Option+W
#11 Tidy Up Behind You
Holding down the "Option" key closes windows behind you as you open folders.
#12 Virtual Memory
Turn on Virtual Memory. [Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> Memory]. Mac OS relies on Virtual Memory for speed and efficiency.
tip: Some applications, mostly sound or video editing packages, recommend that Virtual Memory be turned off. Experiment!
#13 New Browser Windows
When following a link from Sherlock or within your browser, holding the "Apple" key and clicking a link will open a fresh browser window, leaving any existing browser windows as they were.
#14 Screen Shots
Snapshot of screen: Apple+Shift+3
Shapshot of specific area: Apple+Shift+4 then drag a marquee
plus: Snapshot to clipboard: Press "Control" also
#15 Faster Startups
On many Macintosh models, it is possible to disable the Startup Memory Tests that your Mac conducts after the "chime" and before your display comes to life. You can access the switch by holding Apple+Option and opening the Memory Control Panel [Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> Memory]. Turning off the tests can dramatically speed up your startup time depending on the model of Mac you have and the amount of memory installed.
#16 Access All Areas File Sharing
Always supply an Owner Name and Password in the File Sharing Control Panel [Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> File Sharing -> Start/Stop]. Why? Because regardless of the settings in Users and Groups, and any File Sharing privileges you may have assigned, the person with the Owner name and password information has unrestricted access to the hard disk[s], CD ROMS and removables attached to a given networked Macintosh with File Sharing started.
#17 File Sharing Over the Internet
If you want to be able to share files with other Macintosh users over the internet, or using the faster TCP/IP protocol if your local network supports it, then you can turn on the option in the File Sharing Control Panel. [Apple Menu -> Control Panels -> File Sharing -> Start/Stop]
#18 Connecting to other Macintoshes over the Internet
To connect to a Macintosh that is File Sharing on the internet, open the Network Browser in the Apple Menu, then select Connect to Server. You will need to know the IP address of the other [remote] Macintosh, which will be displayed in its File Sharing Control Panel.
#19 Open All Folders
To open all folders and sub-folders in a Finder list view, click the enclosing folder, and press Apple+Option then click on the little triangle next to the folder.
tip: Press Apple+Option+Click Triangle again to close them all!
