Thanks a LOCK! (Tennesse River) |

Skinwalker Log August 16, 2004, Monday
Power line Cove, Lake Tellico on the Little Tennessee River.
There is a mist upon the water and the temperature coolishly comfortable. We were here over a week ago with Jesse & Kathy and now here with my mother, the oldest woman I know. There are a few dogwoods along the bank that were slightly redden in color last week, this week they are dark rose to rust color. They have definitely changed some and there are more of them with color. It is too early for color, we know; that wont come until October. But someone forgot to tell these small bushy trees it isnt time yet.
It will be warm for another day or two, and then I suspect another low will bring back some chill to the air.
We took Mom down the Ft. Loudon Lock and further down river to the I-75 Bridge, back up the river and lock to this, one of our favorite coves.
We tried to go swimming yesterday but the water is about 10 degrees colder, beyond our imagination for playing in and enjoying.
Mom seems to be enjoying herself, we hope so. She can still scramble around like a powder boy skylarking in the uppers. She is slightly slower, perhaps, but still agile and amazingly graceful when the ship is underway. We chide her to keep one hand for the ship but she just kinda ignores us to show us, we suppose, that she knows when she needs to hang on and when she doesnt. She doesnt need our help in getting in and out of the dinghy which amusingly annoys Lynn who still struggles from time to time. A mother-in-law could mysteriously disappear off a boat by being too capable. Besides that, even though she cant hold a hand of cards well, she beat the crap out us last night in a card game we taught her.
Good thing she is going home tomorrow, no one likes her anyway, that is why we keep passing her around visiting people. Did I mention she is the oldest person I know? She has passed old; she has transcedented into an ancient one. But what are you going to do, ya know, we still love her.
We hope the security at the airports never challenge her, I would hate to see what she would do to them with her knitting needles and elbows. I can see it now, Cindy and Don bailing out an 82 year old outraged woman from Sheriff Joe Arpieos Maricopa County Jail. That jail would never survive the siege.
We go back to the marina this afternoon and tomorrow she will leave us for Phoenix. We will miss her. It has been good having her visit and seeing her working on the boat againnow where is that damn ankle ball & chain. Better here than in the County Jail, right?
Relative smirks from the pilothouse,
Wayne & Lynn
